Xana took the letter from the Umbran representative with a hand that shook slightly, and the tremor was not necessarily due to pain or the treatments she often used and sometimes abused for it. With a voice as true as she could muster, she explained to the courier that she would be certain to personally deliver the message to the maman. Several pleasant but strained pleasantries were exchanged between the two, and the courier left--presumably returning to Umbra.

Before taking the letter to the maman, Xana quickly scanned the words. Her heart leapt as she read the message, and dread mixed with fear welled within her.

She traveled to the Ilshenar camp where she knew maman to be staying of late and asked permission to see her. Permission was granted, and Xana entered with her head bowed. Wordlessly, she offered the parchment to Sabine and waited for it to be read. Ancient-seeming, intelligent dark eyes took in the message, and the maman smiled to Xana as she handed the letter back to the younger woman.

"You will accept their assistance. Times are harder than usual, child. Do not bother sassing me with your opinions of those different from us. Be gone, and be sure to be appropriate and respectful in your response."

With all of her resources, Xana managed to keep her expression neutral and not grit her teeth at the harsh directive.

"Of course, maman. As you wish."

And so saying, Xana exited the vardo into a beautiful twilit evening.

She felt sick. Very, very sick.
