The raven flitted low over the rock of the void islands as it approached Sanctus. As it reached Sanctus proper it began to dodge around buildings as it took the most inauspicious path it could towards its destination. Castle Blackguard. Arriving at its target, the raven dove rapidly and dropped the small scroll it carried at the feet of the guards who watched the fortress walls.

Greetings King Talon Skyfire of Sanctus,

I am sure we have met before, though I doubt in any form beyond threatening me. So I will not be surprised if you do not know who I am. Honestly, I would not be surprised if you didn't even manage to read this! The King of a growing Imperial power must have so little time to respond to such strange missives. But I shall nevertheless continue this letter to you as if you had received it. After all, after the happenings of the previous evening, I owe you as much.

I cannot begin to express my pleasant surprise to have seen you draw swords and fight along side the remnants of the Realm of Umbra, a foe you and yours once swore to destroy. A foe that has not changed a day since it departed Umbra for Stonegate, besides perhaps becoming more aggressive and openly violent. The mote of concern I initially had regarding viewing such an impressively arrayed force has long since given way to the interest in the action itself. You have aided one evil to spite another. But not an evil that you can wield against us and "use". You gained no benefit. The spirit of purity, if nothing else, is lost in Sanctus. I saw that spirit mere days earlier at the Protectorate meeting. Now, but a few days hence, it is gone. I understand now what I saw then was just the last fleeting glimpse of a small measure of glory, subsumed almost entirely in hubris.

But I did not write this to mock you, King of Sanctus. But to thank you. You may not believe it possible from "evil" such as I. That gratitude is beyond us. Indeed I imagine it is so thoroughly ingrained into you that we can do not but "wrong". I suppose this is to be expected as you actually know so little of us besides what you want to know. But my thanks is genuine nevertheless. You see, I have been agonizing over what to teach next to my acolytes as nothing has struck me as entirely pertinent these past few weeks. However, with this, you have inspired me. Sanctus was once the exception that threatened to question the rule that is Entropy. Now? Now it is the most evident proof that confirms the rule. The once shining swords of virtue are now caked and corroded with rust. So shall it is and so shall it be taught for generations to come.

There is a way to prove me wrong of course. And that is to admit that you were wrong. Not to me, of course. But to yourself and those around you. But we both know this will never come to pass. You would sooner secretly sell your soul to a demon than admit a fault on your part. You will find excuses, I know it. Perhaps that we are a greater evil, so it is acceptable that a lesser evil be worked with. That denying us our aim is worth any cost of self, even if that be your own honor and sense of justice. So many beautiful turns of phrases and powerful rhetoric to let everyone know that you not only did what MUST be done, but what was truly the most righteous act possible. And when the last forces of "good" make such excuses, the Light of the Virtues dims forevermore. I know this. You know this. But it doesn't matter anymore. The era of the Lightbringers and their fight against "evil" is over.

You are no longer the despised and hated enemy you once were before. Now, you are just an enemy. Perhaps, as you come to recognize your own ambitions, you will come to shake hands with us in brotherhood that we might control Malas together in Imperial glory. After all, you've taken one step. Why not take another?

Walk in Darkness,

Izrem Verin'Vlos
Magus of Shadows and Lorekeeper of the Scholomance
Ancient of the Order of the Ebon Skull
