The meeting with the Duchess and the Wolf King, one designed to come to some terms for the disposition of Luna and its precious moongate without further battle, had not gone well. During the meeting, Thraxas was annoyed first by the plucking of a bird by one of the Stonegate soldiers, which they allowed to continue, a move clearly aimed at showing their disdain for visiting heads of state. And only when the King of Sanctus arrived was any word resembling mild rebuke offered. Furthermore, Talon made it clear to all that he considered both parties equally friends. He entered without greeting and stood at the end of the table between them speaking as if the entire conciliatory effort was his to command, and the lands in question, his to barter. Even though he wanted to stay and assist Molly, Thraxas had to leave. In mere moments any chance that some semblance of unity among Protectorate members still existed, was destroyed. Thraxas expressed his dismay to the Duchess privately and departed.

The Protectorate was a laughingstock. It was evident to all except to fools and strutting, stiff-necked, dotards. Its members hurried to make alliances with those who had recently humiliated them in battle, and then strode roughshod over those who had been their allies for many long years. So although Thraxas admired the spectacle for its irony and perfidy, he did not wish to be tied to it any longer.

After taking care of some personal matters, Thraxas sat down and wrote a letter to King Sid:

"Your Esteemed Majesty,

Greetings,

I pray for your health and well-being, and that of your Queen and family. I hope you and they do prosper.

My lord, after much thought and evidence displayed before my very eyes, I have reached a decision about our involvement with the Protectorate; the very institution which was, in the beginning, the product of your own will, when you departed the Regency. The Protectorate, which has never appreciated you, nor rewarded you suitably for your labors and patience, has become an organization without reason to exist. Its very name is a misnomer; it can protect nothing.

Its strength, which once lay mainly in Sanctus, is now gone. Its unity, which was held together by strong leadership, is broken. Sanctus is a paper tiger, which relies upon ancient, re-cloaked, enemies for its own protection; without which it cannot survive. Where were they when Yew's lands ran red with the blood of those of us who claimed alliance with them? Was there not even one of them who lifted a hand in our defense? Nay, not a one. And now, these so-called paladins have forsaken their former friends out of fear, instead seeking the safety of, and kinship with, their hereditary, philosophical, and mortal enemies. If we should ever have need for that, we do not all claim to be "paladins of virtue" as do they.

Therefore, I have decided that we should renounce our affiliation with the Protectorate and dissolve all ties with them immediately. It is clear to me that they will never allow you to become Governor Regent, and if they did, they would treat you as they have treated Starfire... with disdain bordering on contempt, as they have done to each one who has held that position. Surely you can see this.

I seek your counsel on this matter and will speak to you face to face about it. Let us meet soon.

Your Friend and Servant,

Thraxas
Lord Regent of Yew"
