In truth, Izrem wasn't entirely certain what he expected when he sent the two letters to the two kings of Malas. He hadn't expected anything back, but then again it hardly seemed out of place for response to come. His tone had been sincere, though perhaps he doubted it would ever come off seeming as such. Least of all when enemies were involved. It was thus with a pleasant surprise that he found himself in possession of replies from both of his erstwhile pen pals.
Talon's letter had proven to be exactly what Izrem expected he would hear if the King of Sanctus had chosen to reply. Reminders of the strength of the Light, previous successes of Sanctus, reminders of the strength of the Light, defense of his new "allies" and, of course, reminders of the strength of the Light with an additional note of it soon being liberally applied to every face in Umbra that looked at him funny. At least he still spoke like he was entirely right. That aspect hadn't changed in him. Just the parts that actually made him different from other kings of less holy nations. Dealthagar had noted during lore class that perhaps his time spent trapped in the void changed him more than he or any others realized. Perhaps. Taint often comes from somewhere, not spontaneously from within. Usually anyway. The way the man had acted at the coronation of Blackmarsh's new emperor certainly hadn't seemed regal, despite his long experience in such matters. Perhaps there really was something there that had not been before.
Izrem had penned a response with what he viewed as a sufficient rebuttal before turning his attention to the Wolf Kings letter.
Myrddin ab'Arawn. Izrem wasn't entirely certain exactly what he expected from the Wolf King. Certainly not this. As he read through the response, Izrem found himself filled with elements of both interest and annoyance. Where was the pretension or smarm? Where were the open declarations of hate and threats of destruction? The letter lacked such faults. The response was perfect. Too perfect. It told Izrem so much about the Wolf King he had not known. But then... Izrem realized he knew considerably less of the man whom had been raised as the son of the Matriarch of Umbra than he liked. It was troubling in its own way. He certainly was a warrior king. Strangely detached yet still focused.
"You would have made a fine drow," Izrem commented quietly as his eyes continued to scan the parchment. "It is a pity that we had to end up on opposite sides, Wolf King Myrddin ab'Arawn. For some reason, I get the feeling I would have liked to have known you better for our own sake, rather than for the sake of trying to kill you."
Rolling up the letters and binding them with wax, Izrem placed Talon's response in the general lore archives as he did all other posters, missives and announcements that he felt inclined to keep. Keeping Myrddin's response in hand he ascended to the forbidden levels of the Scholomance and disappeared into the inner vaults. Talon's letter was textbook and open to public scrutiny. Myrddin's? Somethings belonged only in the eyes and purview of scholars as learned and wise as a lorekeeper such as Izrem. _________________ Femmies?! HOWAH!
Can't we all just get along? No? Excellent. |
