Isk stared out the misted window of his cabin as the Legacy rocked with might along the uneasy shore of barren Magincia. The creaking of his ship echoed in the blue smoked emptiness of the vessel. It was an atmosphere in which thoughts and retrospections could flourish.
There had been a story that had formed as a result of his city’s demise:

The story was that a mother had witness the death of her children and in her sorrow took her life by falling into the sea. Later when ghosts claimed the city in the following weeks the waters of Magincia became rougher. Adventurers that battled with the undead along the shores of Pride’s city could sometimes see the body of a woman laying face down among the raging torrents and face up when the waters were calm.
The story goes that when her face is in the waters her screams turn the sea into a rage. The waters can only rest when she lies on her back, but then the ears of sailors close by hear the mourning screams of a Magincian.

“It fills me with guilt,” the Magnate said to his reflection against the dark window. His thoughts were on the Regent. “She gave herself like a sacrifice on the altar of this land. Why did I have it so easy when I was Regent?”
Isk sighed as he reflected on the discussion he had with his friend:

“We’ll be leaving, a majority of the Protectorate will separate.” He had paused and taken in the understanding look of Starfire’s face.
“Everyone has their own choice, Isk” She had said to him that day. “Everything has a beginning and an end. Suppose we might be at the end”

Turning from the window he paced towards his old oak desk through the clouds of blue. His shoulders moving like a predator about to leap though his legs felt light as if walking on the edge of bliss. Setting his calm hands on the wood he breathed in that old yet newly familiar scent of Utopia streaming from a silver brazier with gluttonous circumference. Utopia was drug that the Regent, Starfire, had weaned him off of. Now, no longer associated with the system of Light he could do nothing more than take two steps back towards a vice that would help him through his new course.
As the bluish fumes enchanted the openings of his mask the old lion bathed in its sweet caress. He had stepped off the pedestal of service and now had entered something new.

Maritime Union:
Thraxas had commanded the audience of his guests, making declarations and pitching ideas that were soaked up like a sponge by the disenchanted. An alliance based on the commercial well being of all those involved. “We need to start looking out for ourselves!”
Trade
Prosperity
Equality
Co-Dependence…
…and as Isk thought, self-centeredness.

He smiled beneath that emotionless mask. That blank visage of porcelain had presided over the fall of so many fortunes. The raging waters of his mind were calming as now he would be back to his old self, though there was a wailing cry in the distance. |
