Greyskull sat in his Kenderholm office, searching through mounds of old and near faded journals. Many of which he hadn’t read in over 200 years, but all held hope of finding the answers he sought.
“Jonathan, you haven’t eaten your dinner, in fact you haven’t eaten much the last few days. Are you feeling well?” Asked Shanla, the caretaker of Kenderholm.
“I’m… fine. I have just been too pre-occupied to think of food. This necklace that once held Gryhm, I have been searching over all the old records I was given when my mentor Osyrus died. Many journals were given to me; the others were donated to the Lyceaeum in Moonglow. My damn memory is failing me as to where he said this necklace was from. But my instincts are screaming to head to Ilshenar.” The old man rubbed his eyes as he closed another journal.
“I’ve known you for years Jonathan, if there is one thing I have learned, is that your instincts rarely fail you.” Shanla smiled as she poured him some tea. The old man smiled “Thank you.”
“You didn’t really come in here to check on if I’ve been eating have you. You are really here for an update on the halfling. And you have a right to be concerned, for I haven’t heard from him in days. The last communication I received from him was when he was making arrangements to return a young woman Gryhm had taken from Cove. In her grief she claimed her own life. The poor dear…” the old mans voice trailed off as he lowered his head in shame.
“Yes I am concerned, not just for Burfoot, but you as well. You shouldn’t blame yourself for things Gryhm has done.” She placed a comforting hand on his shoulder “You burden yourself too much as it is, and you need to learn to relax”
“I wish I could, I really do, but he is my responsibility, and he is the last of my true flesh and blood. There is no other after us, any other with our bloodline died of old age or wars past.” Greyskull stood up from his chair and straightened his robe. “Thank you again for the tea. I think I may see if my instincts are correct after all.” The old man smiled as he picked up a bread loaf and headed to the door “For the trip.”
Greyskull arrived to the Meer village nearly an hour later after stocking up on needed provisions. The Meer nodded at his presence and continued on their daily routines. “Excuse me lad, I was wondering if you can help me?” he asked a Meer while he was grooming himself
“What do you want human, I’m rather busy” the Meer replied harshly
“I was wondering if I may speak to one of your elders… an Eternal.”
The Meer stood up and cocked his head to one side. “Why may I ask would you want to see an Eternal?”
Greyskull reached into his pack and pulled out a small jeweled box then opened it to reveal its contents. The Meers’ eyes widened and Grey could swear he saw the furry face become pale. “Where did you get this Human!” the Meer lunged for it but the old man closed the box and pulled it away. “That is of no concern to you. I seek an audience with an Eternal… today would be nice.”
The young Meer left Greyskull and returned moments later with a Captain of the guard. Again the old man asked to see an Eternal, and his request was granted, on the condition he didn’t reveal the location that they were taking him too. The old man nodded and agreed, and the three ventured off to the Meer Catacombs.
Once inside the chambers, Greyskull was amazed at the amount of empty sarcophagus’ that were arranged in a deliberate order. Hundreds of them, all of them to his amazement were as pristine as the day they were first created centuries ago.
“This way human, and please don’t take long, they may be old and wise, but their time is their own and we wish you away from here as quickly as possible.” The Meer captain pointed to a northern wall where a waterfall was flowing. There sat a Meer Eternal, gazing into the water at his reflection.
“My Lord, this human wishes an audience. And I do believe you will want to speak to this one.” The captain bowed and stepped away
The Meer Eternal looked at the old man squinted his eyes a bit as if to get a better look, “And what is it that requires you to have an audience with me Human?” the Eternal asked.
“My name is Jonathan Greymalkin, my friends call me Greyskull, and if it would please you, you may do so as well. As for my request…” Greyskull again went into his pack and pulled out the jeweled box and opened it “this is the reason for my being here.”
“Interesting, and how did you come about this artifact? Most have been destroyed or are left in a secret chamber. This one is destroyed for sure, since the crystal is shattered.” The Meers’ aloofness of the necklace startled Greyskull some, since the younger Meer attempted to take it from him.
“It was given to me, many years ago by my mentor. It was used to hold a man to stop him from a rampage of destruction and murder. This man was also my brother.”
“I see” the Meer stood up and walked over “may I hold it hum… Greyskull?”
Greyskull handed the box to the Meer, and the Eternal removed the necklace to examine it further. “Ah yes, this one was one of the last created, I can tell by the markings along the back. An apprentice of Adranath by the looks of it and is in fairly good condition for its age… despite the shattered crystal of course.
“Is there anyway to repair, or perhaps replace, the broken crystal?” asked Greyskull with concern
“Repair, no. Replace is also nearly impossible, since the crystals used have not been seen in these parts for as long as I can remember. What would you do with it if it was whole again… if I may be so bold?”
Greyskull took a deep breath and replied “I would use it to recapture my brother, before he causes more harm”
“How long was he in here to begin with? 10-20 years?”
“No, 340 years, and up until a month or so ago was safe and secure in a locked chest until the curiosity of a halfling got the better of him, and he was accidentally freed.”
“340 years? But that would make you…”
“About 30 years older, yes. It’s a complicated process, and I doubt it will work much longer.”
The Meer nodded and handed the box back to the old man. “I wish you the best in dealing with your brother. He sounds like a man that would need to be placed in the Prisonstone.”
“And the crystal?” Greyskull asked.
“As I stated, they no longer grow in these parts… but then I never traveled to the northern lands, nor have I ventured deep into the Wisp Dungeon.” The Meer smiled and winked.
The old man smiled and bowed respectfully “Thank you my friend, you have helped save the lives of many”.
The Meer nodded and watched Greyskull recall home. |
