The crack of thunder pulled the young mans gaze up from the book in his hands. He found himself sitting cross legged upon a rocky hill. The sky was a sea of rolling black clouds with occasional flashes of lightning. The valley below was crawling with the scenes of battle. On one side were creatures that could’ve only come from a childs nightmare, on the other men and women dressed in black and gold. Above them, a large golden dragon hovered. The dragon would occasionally spout fire in the direction of the creatures and he could feel the energy exuding from the dragon toward those fighting the creatures.

Glancing behind him the man was suddenly standing and gazed upon the village he had been residing in. His friends were moving about their business, eating, working, laughing. He tried to speak with them but they ignored him, as if he wasn’t there. Looking back towards the valley he found himself surrounded by those in black and gold. Some were fighting; others were speaking to him frantically, though he could not hear their words.

Another flash of lightning and he found himself standing in the open plains. A league away on his left was his village, on the right the ferocious battle. With a thunderous crash the massive golden dragon landed in front of him. The dragon leaned in and examined him for several moments; the young man could hear the creature’s thoughts. In one fluid motion the dragon raised its head back and roared.

***************************************************

The young mans eyes opened. Looking up at the roof of the hut he had been staying in the crisp morning air reminded him where he was. Attempting hastily to shake off his sleepy state, he tried to remember the details of his dream. If he could remember it all, maybe it would give him a clue to the life he could not remember.
