The air was thick with electricity, a storm had just breezed overhead and was now off in the distance as Bailos stood from the third story of his tower, lording over the land below, looking out on to the road that ran nearby. As rain dripped down the outerwalls, still draining from the roof, a scribe opens a door into the room Bailos is in and without a word, sets a rather large leatherbound book down on a small table, and leaves as he entered.
Several more minutes at the window brought Bailos back to the table to sit and read.....clumsily flumbling the pages open and turning them, gazing over a few pictures until he find the spot he wants, Bailos grows a look of anticipation on his face.
Stopping nearly a third of the way through the book, he settles on a page with a drawing of a man standing on top of a sphere, apparently a world, with his hand outstreched and the title of the chapter reading; "Ascension". As the pages turn, Bailos' eyes widen with every paragraph....finally after several pages, he slams the book shut on his lap and his eyes dart around the room, tense and nervous.
Stashing the book away underneath his robe he immediatly starts to pace around thinking aloud,
"The power.....all that power....but it's so simple. It can't be that easy....or is it? But......What if I'm not able to?! Why WOULDN'T I be able to?...........
Balbanes.....he wouldn't care.....would he? But he wouldn't stop me.......he couldnt...None of them....How do I do it?! Noone else should know..where.....when?!"
Finally his ramblings stop and he pulls the book back out. Holding it in front of him, reading over the archaic nonsense on it's cover, he throws it on to the table once more and speaks the words of recall before it hits the wooden surface, on to assemble the people and things he needed. |
