Eclyse peered into the room, finding Kaylor in a state of fitful sleep. A sheen of sweat glistened in the candlelight as he rolled his head from right to left, his brow furrowed even in slumber. Quietly, slipped a bottle out of her pack and poured it onto a soft white cloth, soaking it with lavender-scented mineral water. She lightly brushed his damp hair back from his forehead and felt for fever. He was cooler to the touch than he had been before, so she folded the wet cloth and draped it across his forehead.

Gradually, the expression of angst began to relax away and his restless movements stilled. My poor Knight…Please rest well.

She corked the bottle and exchanged it in her pack for a crisp, rolled parchment tied with a black ribbon, and laid the scroll gently upon his bedside table. She retreated downstairs for only a moment, to pour a glass of cold water from a pitcher of melting snow she’d placed in the windowsill earlier. Returning, she placed the glass near the scroll at his bedside. Then with a final lingering look upon his peacefully resting visage, she slipped out of the room and down the stairs, leaving her knight to rest in silence.
