Steam rolled from his lips as he sat outside the New Haven mint. Winter had returned, and brought with it a cold wind out of the south west. He shivered, as he pulled the red cloak of a mortal Shai, had given him tighter around his body. Even though it did little to protect him from its bite. He smiled as he thought to himself that soon things such as the cold would no longer be a nuisance to him, and how not even death would be able to touch him.
As he stared out at the crowd that had begun to form in the town square his thoughts drifted back to when he was a child living on these very streets. He recalled having to steal bread and meat from Maynard the cook so he would not starve, and hiding from Rio the stable mistress so he could be warm while he slept at night.
He let these thoughts and memories pass from his mind. For they were memories of a mortals life, a life he would soon have no more use for, and one he would just as soon forget.
He would die soon; he knew this. Yet, in this he found a comfort he had not found anywhere else in his travels. He knew that Dalton Reed the mortal would soon pass from this world, and he would be reborn as something so much more. He smiled. |
