Her arms folded over her chest, Paytience stood just out of Christopher's eye line. She didn't have Alain's or Meegan's talent for walking in shadows. She did try to maker herself scarce though, not that it mattered. Had she been wrapped in darkness those piercing green eyes would have found her just the same. Silence humid and soft enveloped the duo. Like a pie crust rakes across the top of its filling, so did the tense air across the woman and her nephew.
Tiny hands moved the miniature Tokunese ship through the water at the edge of the beach. Like his father and his aunt, Christopher had a love of sailing. And like his Mother, he saw way too much for one so young. Periodically she would catch it as those eyes flashed and a look of pain cross his small face. A replica of her brother, it broke her heart to see that edge, that jagged rip in the folds of whatever the hell someone believed in.
Fate, destiny, time.. all of them were insignificant at this moment. What mattered was that Arahim was on his own and his sister and his son looked on in the quiet, awaiting his return. Yes, it let a bitter taste but Pay understood he had needed to do this. Just as she would take no argument if it were her choice to make. The lot of them were kindred, free spirits.
Brushing a strand of Jet black hair out of her face she thought of her own life at the moment. Her own choices to make. Not all of which were easy. He must have caught it on the air. Christopher turned at that moment and regarded her with a tinge of adult as he so often did.
"Aunt Pay, it's going to be alright, isn't it?"
She swallowed hard then and walked over to him, toussling his reddish brown mange of hair.
"Yeah Kiddo, it's gonna be alright."
She had no way to guarentee that statement. But she knew for sure that if her Brother died while on this hellacious quest of his she would bring him back just so she could kill him for leaving them, for leaving her.
A memory, as if a wisp of a reminder blew through then..
"You know nothing of family, Paytience."
Joanna had said it the second time they had met... Paytience knew exactly what family meant now. And she was damned if she was going to let it go.
"Come on Chris. I know a cannon with your name one it." Hand in hand they strode off the Magincia beach in search of a ship. |
