I will be planning a major improvement of the Repertory sometime in the fall, but I would like to get an idea on the sorting system I plan to implement, since the single major concern I've heard over the Repertory is the difficulty in finding books quickly and easily.

I weighed several real life options such as the Dewey Decimal system, but due to the loose categorization and logistics of UO libraries, it was hard to effectively apply it to what we currently have. The system I will be implementing on the next revision, pending feedback, will allow players to easily browse shelves and find what they need, as well as providing an out of game list of books that can be easily referenced.

Here is what I have...

Each book will be sorted alphabetically, as they are currently.

The pack number will continue to be recorded as it is currently (I.E. Pack 1, Pack 2, Pack 3)

The new recording scheme will list the row number (1 - 5), as all bags will be arranged with 35 books per bag divided into 7 books per row, which is currently not implemented in the categorization scheme.

Each shelf, along with a category, will have a number assigned to it (IE, Shelf 3 - Legends and Tales N-Z)

The master list on the Wiki will be updated with the shelf, pack and row number to make it easy to find books.

For example, the book "The Life of a Bard" could be found in S3 P1 R2 B4 (or even 3124).

This shows The Life of a Bard is in the Legends and Tales (N-Z) shelf, in the first pack, on the second row of books, and it is book number 4 of that row.

The goal is to have a quick, easy system to categorize the soon to be 2000+ books, while still keeping an organized listing that people can browse on the fly.

A few questions I hope to have answered:

Will this be too difficult to use?

Will it be too difficult to understand?

Will it mechanize the categorization in a negative way, so that people not referencing books find it difficult to just browse and enjoy?

Let me know your thoughts!

If you have a character on Great Lakes, you should take a look at the Wolves’ Hollow Library & Rec Center 102 Howl Ave (88*51’N 1*15’W).
Its located East of Luna about 6 or 7 screens in the clearing of the crystal forest

It is a neat and clean Library that is easy to use. It may help you with getting yours to where you want it, it’s worth the look.

I always thought the current system was pretty easy.. you have every shelf labeled with what's in it, plus a directory.

I have just went full swing into making a library of my own (with the help of stalking your vendor haha). A few thoughts from a humble vampire...

This is what I will be doing...

-Shelves will be listed. Each row will be A, B, C, D and so on. Then going down the row 1, 2, 3 and so on. So for example a single shelf you are looking for might be B3, so you know right off the bat its 2nd row, 3rd bookcase in.

I also planed to do like you said and have the row in the individual bookcase.

Also, the problem I ran into is there was no way to reference a book at all. So what I decided to do with mine is write 3 reference books. 1) By Subject. I have each subject and each book listed in that subject (I also have an abv for each subject like "History" is "HS", and will explain that in a moment). 2) By Title. A book where every book in the library is listed here in alphabetical order. After the title I have "HS" or whatever abv so you can look in the "By Subject" book to find where the book is. 3) By Author. I noticed there is no way to search for a specific persons works. So I listed each author again in alphabetical order, with their books under their name and again the abv next to the book.

I dont know if that was confusing or not. But basically 3 books for people to find what they might be looking for. Its a LOT of writing as I started doing this I have gone insane. I actually have been doing this with your book store... coping EVERY title down so I can keep track of what I already bought. Plus I want a similar system to create a 2nd library in a far off land Smile

Also wondering.... do you have the same copy of a book in different sections? I noticed it with a number of books.. at least have the same title.

Yup, that's a problem I'll be fixing on the next sort through. I removed the duplicates on a shelf by shelf basis during my last sort through, but there are still some duplicates that exist between different sections. Mind you, there are a few titles with the same names and different text as well.
