“Alena Hacke be me name landlubber and dunt ye be forgettin it!” She yelled in the man’s face as she took the little bit of gold he held in his hand. She took the bottle of rum as well and tossed it into her pack. Throwing back her long black hair she gave a piercing whistle and the other pirates grabbed what they could from the shack they called a tavern and headed out.
Back on her ship she laid on the deck alone taking long pulls from a second bottle of rum. Holding the jeweled bracelet up so she could see it sparkle before her blurred vision, her face pulled up into a wretched grin and she laughed softly to herself. She knew this would bring a good price. Her ship needed paint and the mast had a few holes that needed repaired.
She sat up, threw the piece of fluff back into her pack and withdrew an old tattered scroll. Rolling it out on the deck she looked at the likeness of her own face. Smiling and thumbing the smudged picture she remembered the old days. The days when a pirate could make a good living and not be bothered with them do gooder landlubbers.
She had been on the run and hiding out for years. They never even got close. It was time to get back to what she was best at; a girl had to make a living. But this time she would be shrewd. She would play the part of the merchant fisher and sell the damn fish to the towns. While she was in those towns, helping herself to a few trinkets wouldn’t be noticed. So many ships going in and out of the town’s ports would be the perfect cover for her and her crew.
She pulled a pillow she had stolen from Cat out of her pack , stuck it under her head as she lay back on the deck. Her hand went to her eyebrow and fiddled with the little gold fish hook that pierced her skin there. “Just got to be sure Jonah dunt find out. Keepin him distracted won’t be too hard.” Laughing she closed her eyes and drifted to sleep while the water lapped at the sides of the ship |
