It was about six and still here was much to do. Black was getting a lot of loose ends taken care of before his big chess match at Poet’s garden. It had been years since he played at all. A few people in his family played, he remembered when he was young. He grabbed the basket of carrots and some apples for the stables. Now he would look for a nice board to play on.

He headed over to the provisioner to look over their selection. He had heard there was a small selection there. Trinsic seemed quiet today. There weren’t many on the streets this day. He opened the door and saw two boards from there, over against the wall on a small wood table. There were pieces thrown in a box beside them. Black glanced over the pieces a little. He noticed several were missing. Oh great he thought. “Just needed one board and all the pieces”, he mumbled to himself.
He thought he might try somewhere else real quickly. He stepped outside to leave when he noticed a man in the grass sitting there with some trinkets beside him. The man called out to all he was selling some of his prize things real cheap. Black had to walk over to see. Others closed in around the man looking at his wares. There were some old looking things here. He noticed a chess board there. But yet again no pieces. He asked the man if there were pieces for it. The man showed him a set of pieces but these didn’t seem to go with that board. They seemed quite a bit older but with a rustic kind of dinginess about them. After a while he decided to buy them after haggling with the man down some cause of a chip in one of the knight’s ears. He thought one of the other boards at the provisioners would suit these pieces well. He returned there and bought the board. Now his chess set was complete.

It was nearing time to head to Poets garden. He gathered his stuff and headed to Riverun’s library to use the rune there. He mumbled the sacred journey and was on his way. At Riverun he noticed Gurti doing some things near the forge. He didn’t stop to talk; he headed right to the rune book and again mumbled the sacred journey.

Poet’s garden seemed empty. As Black got further in however he noticed a small blocky looking man there at the bar. Now Black had not been here many times but this man seemed quite odd none the less. He sat in the stool and his feet didn’t even get near the floor. How did he get up there Black thought to himself. Poet was walking around filling baskets it appeared. The prelims were about to start soon as Nick arrived to play. Black got himself an ale and set up his board. Not to long after a man came along, he introduced himself as Nick.

This seemed big to Black. A woman there who he knew as Queen Sarah. Well Black didn’t know her just knew of her would also watch the match. With all the pleasantries aside they got started. Black was to go first as he was the white pieces. Black seemed to have trouble focusing on his match with Nick. He tried his best, but was beat by a better opponent. Black accepted defeat and prepared to be a spectator for the rest of the matches. The next match would be a man named Azreal and a woman named Lilyth. She had been sitting at a table towards the back waiting for Black and Nick to finish. She came forward and began to prepare as Azreal had not yet shown up. Black noticed what a beautiful woman she was. How confident she carried herself there. She had the brightest smiled he’d seen he thought. He kept a close eye on her. Azreal was along shortly after. He seemed the most arrogant evil man. This man was too very confident but it came across as completely cocky. The match began and they stared each other down. After some time of excellent gamesmanship and calculated moves, Lilyth was the victor. Black was very happy for her.

After some time it was said that Poet would have to withdraw from the match. He was with a young couple about to be married. Black didn’t know them but they seemed very happy he thought. Now it would be Lilyth against Nick. Black thought Nick was very good but, he would like to see Lilyth win this match and go on to be the white king in the NuJelm chess match coming up soon. Their match was long. Black was getting very sleepy, but he wanted to see Lilyth win. They continued a long time. Black could not stay awake and he excused himself. He really hopes Lilyth wins.

Black returned home. Very tired he laid his clothes on the end of the bed. He pulls back the blankets. Pushes all the throw pillows to the side, and collapses there. It has been a long day and now he will rest.
