Arlin stepped off the gangplank, nearly tripping as he did so and releasing a string of curses so foul, that many sailors nearby could not help but blush. Slinging his drenched pack over his shoulder, he mounted a horse that was waiting for him and took off at a slow pace towards his home in Yew.
"Vacation. Bah" were the only words uttered (over and over again) as Arlin wound his way from the docks of Trinsic up north. He had considered detouring east to Vesper, and to get the jump on Arcana, but he decided to check in on his soldiers first. He was sure there was plenty of work for him to do.
For once he wished he was wrong.
Throwing open the solid steel doors of his fort, he was greeted by a throng of eager recruits, questioning officers, and even a few tavern wenches who were quickly making themselves at home. Groaning inwardly, Arlin pushed through the crowd and dealt with everyone quickly and quietly. After the recruits had been interviewed, the equipment dolled out, and promotions given, there was only one thing left to check.
The pidgeon roost. The mighty half-ogre gulped in anticipation, reaching out cautiously to open the roost. He had barely opened the door before dozens of pidgeons fled the roost, covering Arlin in feathers and droppings. He sighed, and went over the notes. Nothing could be easy, could it?
The Dark Awakening had taken over the Court of Truth, and stood to tear it down. One of his best men Tylus, true to his roots, was hiring his services out as a mercenary. Vaen had pledged to support Arlin's bid for Yew, but he also had the rest of the Yew guilds to worry about. He needed thier support, or otherwise he risked everything he had worked to build.
Arlin rubbed his temples. Only the tip of the iceberg. There was still Tarothin to worry about, and Vesper as well. He knew that Arcana could take care of herself, but he still worried, espcially with the Dark Order seemingly on the move.
That settled it then. "Staff Sergeant Flik, mobolize the men. Prepare to march on the Court. We've much work to do." _________________ As the fire fades to night, remember always the ember that started it all. |
