Cuthbert, Dragonis and Meiv'Kolindo sat inside the circle of stones at the Jhelom Moongate, waiting for Flint, Cuthberts new squire, to arrive. There was little talking. The men adjusted their equipment, strapping down any loose items that might make noise. Low profile was the idea here.

Flint stepped out of the moongate on foot. Cuthbert let a small sigh of exasperation escape him. "Flint... you need a mount. I wont have you running behind us on foot." The squire's face turned deep red. He nodded and left to get his horse. Cuth looked over at Dragonis, who was wearing a highly annoyed expression. "Hes new, Drag. Simple mistakes. Give him time." Dragonis fiddled with his bow and said nothing.

After Flint had returned with his mount, Cuth addressed the three men. They held a short palaver in which Cuth explained the nature of what they were doing; a simple observation of an enemy area. Stay low profile, stay together as a group, and if the Gods willed it, avoid confrontation.

They held tight formation as they approached the area Cuthbert wished to scout. There was little talking, as it should be in such cases, until Flint realized he had been in the area before. He broke the silence by yelling excitedly. "Cuthbert! Ive been here before! Ive seen men here! On the roof a building! Its this way, follow me!" Cuthbert stiffled the reaction of yelling at the boy, reminding himself that a teacher needed to be even handed as much as possible. Flint darted off in front of the group, disappearing into the group of dead ironwood trees in front of them. Cuthbert decided to let him go; either the boy would run head-long into the enemy and learn his own lesson, or noone would be around and it would make no difference how loud he was being. He was fairly sure the second scenario was true; if their targets were around en masse, Cuth guessed he would have seen a few by this time, or at least have been alerted to their pressence. He looked over at Dragonis, who was snearing in the direction Flint ran. Meiv's expression never changed and he stayed tight with the group. He had been learning quickly, and his promotion to Knight was well deserved.

Coming to the edge of the group of trees they were using for cover, Cuth saw that Flint had not stepped out into the clearing. It was well. The boy was showing at least some good intuitions, ones that could be built upon. Flint pointed at two buildings. "It was one of those... thats where I saw them. I think it was the smaller of the two. What is it, some kind of temple?" Cuth nodded. From their current location he could see into the temple. An ankh was standing upright towards the far wall, with a skeleton hanging off of it. Bones littered the ground. He shifted his gaze from the temple to the surrounding area. Noone in sight. The four men stepped into the clearing and circled the perimeter of the buildings. Once done Cuth nodded to himself.

"Okay gentlemen, I think its enough for the day. We've gotten a feeling for the area. We'll keep an eye on whats happening here." He looked at Flint. "You'll be here quite a bit. Stay quiet and stay out of sight. Let noone know you are here. And report back to me on whats happening." Flint smiled and nodded enthusiastically.

Later on that eve Dragonis approached Cuthbert. "You're going to let that Squire do our scouting? Did you see him? No mount, can barely follow orders, cant even keep quiet during..." Cuth cut him off. "Drag, did you hear what the boy said? He said he had been there before. That he'd seen people there before. Clearly they havent seen him, or he'd be dead or badly wounded. Obviously the boy can be quiet when he needs to be. I think he was just... overzealous in trying to impress us. He'll do fine scouting." I hope he added internally.

Dragonis's mind leaped from thought to thought as he spoke with Cuthbert. It was true that the guild needed some new blood, but this kid? He tried to reason with Cuthbert, telling him what huge an possibly fatal mistakes Flint had made on this past little mission, but Cuthbert would hear none of it. Finally, Dragonis simply said, "I guess we better make sure he is better prepared next time, eh,?" and shot Cuthbert a wry smile. He smirked back, "Of course, Dragonis, I am not that thickheaded, you know. I know he needs work." To that statement, Dragonis simply tapped on the side of Cuthbert's head, "Yes you are," he said, and laughed as he walked off.

As he walked along the streets of Jhelom, he began to wonder again about the newest recruit, and how Cuthbert and himself had to nearly hold Flint back when member of the Skull did show up. He shook his head, "That kid, trying to pick a fight with 3 of the Skull... alone," and he let out a deep sigh. But he did have some good qualities. He was eager, and though with not his whole heart, we wished to learn. He just needed some discipline.... just a little discipline.
