Mia stood motionless, against a large tree, peering through the early morning fog, patiently waiting for the great hart to show itself once more. Crouched at her feet was Shasta, one of her father’s hounds, who had taken to following her each time Mia visited her father’s small farm near Skara Brae. Mia smiled, as she glanced down at the dog, silently waiting for their prey to show itself. As the shadowy form of the hart appeared out of the fog, Mia drew back the bow string and let the arrow fly. Shasta leaped up to give chase, but there was no need, for the shot had found its mark, and the great hart staggered only a few steps before collapsing to the ground dead.
Having hung the venison in the smokehouse to cure, Mia , Shasta following at her heels, walked to house where her father sat upon the porch in his rocking chair. “ That venison should keep ya a couple of months father, and I’ll be back to hunt again before the year dawns anew”. The old man slowly looked up, “ya be joining us for the Solstice, girl?” “I best be a going”, Mia replied, “but duties permitting, I’ll be with y’all for the Solstice.” The old man, nodded as Mia briefly checked over her gear, and then turned to leave. Mia stopped, bending over, caressed Shasta’s ears, and whispered, “Be a good dog, and I’ll see ya when I return.“ Mia had just past through the farm’s gate, when her father hollered, “Take this damn dog with ya, she da na listen at any but you! A smile crossing her lips, Mia let out a long low whistle, Shasta with a happy yelp, leapt up and tore off after the Paladin…… |
