*Single copies of this speech are posted at town banks left there to be respected*
Whatever benefit, my friends, can be extracted from any of all my qualifications, I feel duty bound to place at the disposal of the Regency. I appreciate the limitations of my natural ability. But I cannot deny that my experience as a public speaker has been considerable; and I admit I have never at any time felt a disinclination to study the theoretical background of speech-craft. Nor have my arms seen rest as my axe swings for the cause of righteousness. I have been in wars for the Regency first to reclaim Minoc from the Drow before Lord Rufus gifted it to others; and I state with no embellishment that I fought against the orcs in Yew during the most recent campaign. My knowledge of battle tactics comes from Richard the once Captain of Moonlgow who none could compare to in battle skill even today. I speak with the veracity of GreyPawn, the former sage of Honesty. It was in the age when such great men still walked the land that I participated in a ritual to awaken the Avatar with seven other men appointed as sages and in this ritual I was the sage of Valor. My vision is akin to that of Dayel Stormcrow who first began the Regency and I would enter the position with even more energy. I have seen these leading men of that distant age at their greatest and absorbed from them what they deemed to teach even if they were aware or ignorant of the fact that I was taking notes on how to be as great as them.
But if we must take knowledge and skill into account, the noblest recompense a great deed can have is renown. Indeed this is the one and only thing which makes up for the shortness of our lives. It perpetuates among future generations the memory of what we have done; it ensures that in death we are alive. It is glory then that places people on the ladder of heaven and I have already reached a pinnacle of fame for my works, my name will already be remembered after I am departed so it is not for glory or renown that I strive for the position hanging inches from my grasp.
Upon all my efforts, then, the best I can achieve, the title of Regent, is what I feel I was destined for. For as far as I can cast my thoughts back into times gone by, as far as I can recollect the earliest years of my boyhood, the picture of the past reveals an ambitious soul. But you shall not have a philosopher like the Regent who just left. One must couple speech and theory with action and results. With these things having been said, there are certain aims which I shall strive to realize while in this needed role, should that be where I am placed; and knowing that the loyalists are among the most patient of people I shall present long term goals which can not so easily be achieved as well as more immediate objectives. Think not that the intent of these goals would be to force you into action, the faces of the crowded ranks of our audience and assemblies have given me a special satisfaction and you loyalists would be free to participate in simply that aspect alone should you chose, but for those with greater dedication you will find your invested time rewarding.
I have set out with nothing more in mind that the creation of a Golden Age for our land of Trammel and the virtues we hold dear which can be found wherever there is a horizon. Some would call me the patron of lost causes for once I alone held on to a belief which has since become a movement and a guild peopled with great minds. Thus in a time when some speak of us in jest and mock the foundation of our body saying in dark alleys ‘It is all downhill from here’ I would bring the Pride we so long for and silence all the critics.
But enough, it is hard to write with an off- hand. What I am asking you, ladies and gentlemen, is that when you cast your votes on this day, you should be brave enough to act as you really think is right. In your wisdom and courage any decision will be respected. |
