Act 2 Scene 1
A Bonfire of Hate
Narrator: To repeat, the time of our play is in the sixth day after the eighth Regency election. Behold the time of crisis. It has been stated that Umbra suffers from a famine brought about by continuous assaults from Luna. The occupying lords of Umbra having received much punishment ventured out the day before the setting of our play to show their strength. It is at Poet’s Tavern that they created magical fires without regard for those present. A child was caught in the flames and having barely survived brought much grief to his family. The child’s father, Isk, having broken many pieces of furniture ventured from his home and taking with him his son Athlon gathered around him the commander of the loyalist and his faithful companions to seek out revenge. An eye for an eye...
*At the Temple in Umbra stand various member of the cult including Sadrien Church, Darmug Streea, Kearia, Isil and Lazarus. Having received advanced warning they await the arrival of the loyalists. Enter Isk, Athlon, Tai, Arakad and Rryn holding torches*
Darmug Strea: "What is this?"
Isk: “You have someone that belongs to us now. My son has been damaged and by justice equal damage must be delt”
Choir: O’Sarien, our scapegoat. So far removed from the crime though it is you who shall suffer for it. Poor unfortunate soul.
Darmug Strea and Keaira together: He is upstairs awaiting punishment.
*The loyalists head upstairs, the torches lighting up the dark stairwell as the cultists follow, the choir far behind*
Choir: These lightbringers are so blind, without question they seek to punish those that we point out. Like dolls on a string dancing to our sweet song.
*Sadrien Church ruffles through some books, packing other tomes away. He pauses as he sees the men with torches. Isk approaches first followed by Tai, Athlon, and Arakad, Rryn was left behind downstairs*
Sadrien: What is this?
Isk: Revenge. Your friends offer you as the lamb to be sacrificed for the crimes committed against my son, Auris, who was burned the night before while he was playing in the field infront of Poet’s Tavern.
Sadrien: I do not understand...
Darmug: Oblivion’s sacrifice!
Isk: Take hold of him!
*As Tai reaches for Sadrien the man tosses books to protect himself, one catches Isk in his limp right arm, rocking it back and forth lifelessly*
Sadrien: You idiots! You can not do this to me! I have done nothing wrong!
*Sadrien lifts his hand to show the lack of skull markings*
Isk: Come, son. Take just revenge for your brother. Show this cultist how strong our fury burns. Do not delay, come forward and cast this man to the flame.
Athlon: O’Brudder, poor brudder burned by tha skull, I am strong ‘nuff father.
*Athlon approaches slowly, the child no more than seven holding a torch like the adults pauses before the struggling Sadrien who is now held by Tai*
Athlon: You made my brudder burn, you made hims scream.
*At the urging of his father the child lights Sadrien’s cloak and pants on fire, stepping back the lightbringers watch as the cultist burns before their eyes. Arakad tosses his torch into the man-bonfire as does Tai and Athlon*
Choir: Are these the actions of lightbringers or murderers? Without trial, without proof they would kill this man we offered. They make killers of their own children. This is revenge not justice.
Sadrien: AAAAAAaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggghh! No.. H-help me!
*All lightbringers watch with detachment, only Tai approaches the burning man*
Tai: Ask for help again and it shall be granted to you
Sadrien: Heeellllp me!
*Tai empties his water flasks on the man as Sadrien rolls to save his life, Arakad nods at the work of his commander*
Arakad: Such pain, excessive but necessary. Commander Tai, this man will live past this night
*Isk places his left hand on his son’s shoulder*
Isk: Divine justice has been dealt. You have been made a man before your time, Athlon. Now let us leave this dark place before we are tainted by the sin held within these walls. My son is avenged and this unfortunate soul, should he survive this trial by fire shall be marked for the rest of his days. This is the will of fate.
*Exit the lightbringers as Sadrian pulls himself up on the table, still breathing and quite alive though horribly marked by the flames. All actors leave the stage* |
