|
He emerged from the healers on his own two feet. The sharp pain has gone but each step was an uncomfortable feeling. His wound has mended enough that it would survive the journey ahead. Before him stood a row of his fellow Knights. Clad in their ceremonial garb and armor. They all saluted to honor their lord and Duke. Though still in pain, Kotare insisted on walking out on his own unaided and in full armor as a symbol of strength and a sense of defiance at the attempt of his life. He looks skyward to let his eyes adjust to the sunshine. Life in Britan had an overcast and gray clouds were all that Kotare could remember for a long time. To see the Sun for the first time in days irked him.
Looking back to those who salute him, there was a croud who had gathered to look upon the events unfolding. A young boy, who could be no older than four years of age, stood by the side and mimiced the salute of the knights. As Kotare returned his salute, He couldn't help but wonder about the boy's future.
"Like my ansestors before me, I once saluted the passing ranks of knights as a child. Could it be this boy will see my fate? Will he take up a sword rather than a pen?" Kotare thought to himself.
Some of the people went on their daily activities as if no invasion ever happened at all. Its not that Kotare wanted a thank you, He was above that. He knew that those who sacrificed deserved a soldiers funeral. As a survivor, it was not about the glorification of himself, but of those who fought. So it was not suprising that he stoped in mid stride to say a few words before being helped onto his horse.
"I know that many of you are greatful for the service of those who protected you from the dangers of invasion. I know that I am but one of many thousands of defenders who fought to protect you. But the glory isn't all mine. It belongs to those who didn't make it. It was they who gave up all to ensure your families are safe. It was they who gave up everything to ensure your freedom to live as you choose. Life is too precious to give up on a whim. Those poor souls who gave their lives, only want you to remember the cost of of your freedom. So as I part from you all and return to my home in Yew, I borrow the words of my late father. Forget not thy fallen this day..."
Kotare climbed up on his horse with the aid of two of his knights and then looked back to the boy, only to find him gone. Kotare did not see the boy leave, but unknown to Kotare, the boy along with his mother went to the cemetary to pay their respects to those why gave their lives in this conflict. A new memorial stone was placed. On the stone says:
"Here lay the defenders of Britan, who's bravery brought about our defiance, their courage instilled in us, our hope and their sacrifice gave us, our gratitude. Thank you defenders of Britan, Thank you." |
