Several weeks had passed since the Otori's had returned from their vacation. A needed break and some much needed time alone. They had enjoyed the time immersed in just each other and enjoying the many sights and beautiful temples they came across in their travels. Rryn sighed quietly in retrospect of her many happy memories.
She sat at the Freehold Garden sipping on some tea and knitting, lost in her thoughts. The sound of much merriment was heard. She looked up to see the giggling children enter the tavern hanging onto Hugh. Lorilli, Athlon and Padruig each had a hold onto him begging him to play some game. She smiled as he lifted each child one at a time and swung them about until they sat down dizzy, laughing hysterically. Watching this, she suddenly felt ill again. She quickly set her knitting down and exited to the bath facilities.
Splashing water on her face, she again wondered what could be causing her to feel this way. It had been affecting her for several weeks. The food they had eaten had seemed fine, even her own cook had quietly looked into the pantry to make sure the food supplies were not tainted. Perhaps it was the water they drank on vacation? She sighed as she looked in the mirror. She certainly did not look ill. " This will pass eventually" she said quietly to herself determined that whatever it was , eventually it would be out of her system. She sat down on a bench in the washroom trying to meditate and calm her body.
She sensed Hugh had entered the room, but he surprised her when he suddenly appeared next to her. She was startled and laughed. He had been practicing well to walk in the shadows. As her laughter came out , the wave of nausea hit her again and her laughter ended in a moan. Hugh quickly pulled a bucket from the water basin and placed it at her feet. After a few moments had passed Hugh looked at her and grinned....
"So when are ye plannin ta’ tell oor wee lad, Tai?"
"Tell him what?” Rryn replied."That I have been sick? I am sure whatever itis will pass soon enough."
" Aye, in aboot nine months." Hugh grinned even wider.
" Nine ....what?" Rryn looked at Hugh as if he had lost what little sense he had.
" Aye, mayhap sooner as I dunna ken how long ye have been wi’ child."Rryn just looked at him in shock. A child? She was with child? Thinking back over the last few weeks, the illness, could it really be true? She realized Hugh was trying to talk to her and she focused back on what he was saying.
" ...if ye like."
" If I like ?" she replied still somewhat in shock.
Hugh just looked at her and laughed. "I said I can read the heartfire, and see if everything is alright if you dun mind me doing so." Rryn nodded her approval and Hugh formed his hands precisely, and placed them upon her stomach. After several minutes Hugh's face took on a strange look.
" Oh my!" Several seconds passed and again " Och, an bloody hell … Oh my!""
"Oh my?" Rryn became concerned. " Is the child alright?""
" Aye , though I must tell ya I have never felt so many heartfires before at one time."
" So many....."
" I would say there are at least three in there"
" Three!" Rryn looked at her stomach and Hugh's hands again in shock and amazement.
The door opened suddenly admitting the children in. They had been looking for Hugh to continue their game. Seeing the adults looking all serious, they immediately became concerned that something was wrong. Lorilli askedwhat was wrong and Hugh quickly assured the children that all was well. He told them the news and asked them to be quiet about it as Rryn had just learned and it might not be wise to have Tai know just yet. Hugh was
concerned about something he had read in Silent Poet's journals , insights
and visions he had seen before he passed on to allow his younger self to
inhabit this realm. However he was not about to tell the children any of
this. He just explained to them that their Uncle Tai was a little bit on
the over protective side and would probably have Rryn locked away and only have handmaidens for company until the babies arrived. He solicited from each of the children, a solemn promise to keep the secret, a promise on their very own membership of the Turtle Club. They all did the secret pinkie shake on it and promised not to tell. Rryn just smiled and wandered off to the tavern to get some tea. Now that she understood what was wrong, she could blend the right tea's to control the illness. Hugh arrived in thetavern after settling the children in for the night. Sitting down, a serious look came over his face. He took several sips of ale...
" I have been deciphering some verra important information in Poet's
journals, Rryn. They concern insights about you and Tai and the babes. I am serious Rryn, ye must no tell Tai just yet aboot the babes...." |
