Claudette paced back and forth in her home. She was beside herself with worry. She could not believe how the night had gone from a friendly get-together amongst friends to complete chaos. When Ceinwyn entered Poet's carrying her cousin Brianha she felt her heart leap to her throat and got a very uneasy feeling about it. She quickly ran towards them and asked what had happened. "She slipped on the ice,” Ceinwyn explained. Her dear cousin lay unconscious and pale in Ceinwyn's arms.
After settling her upstairs on one of the beds and watching Hugh chant and pray over her she looked up at Lord Flair and began to sob uncontrollably. Lord Flair assured her that things would be all right and that she had to be strong for her cousin. Claudette took a deep breath and as Brianha slowly came to, she began soothingly calling her name and telling her she would be fine. As Brianha opened her eyes, Claudette saw something that really frightened her. She knew something was horribly wrong and then Brianha spoke the words that pierced her heart. “I’m sorry, I do not know who you are,” she said. Claudette looked up at Lord Flair with pain in her eyes and asked him what she should do. He again reassured her and told her to be strong. She took a deep breath and explained that they were cousins and had grown up together. There was no recognition in Brianha’s eyes and Claudette felt panic rise deep within her.
She had lost someone she loved long ago and didn’t know if her heart could take such a loss again. Between feelings of panic and reason, she managed to find Max, her guild master. He didn’t quite understand how serious it really was and continued to tell her that Brianha would be all right. Claudette had a very strong feeling that he was wrong but trusting him to know what to do, she returned to Brianha’s bedside.
When she saw Vaen right outside the bedroom she felt a knot in her stomach and took a deep breath. She walked up to him and told him what had happened. She told him that at the mention of his name she had seen only confusion in Brianha’s eyes. It pained her to have to tell him he couldn’t see her but for her cousin’s sake she knew she had to keep people away. “We have to be strong for her” she had said to Vaen “We both love her and want to help her.” When Vaen hugged her she fell apart in his arms and sobbed, she knew she had to be strong for Brianha but she also needed someone to comfort her and ironically, Vaen was just the right person at the time.
Exhausted, Claudette lay on her bed with tears falling down her face. Thinking only about her beloved cousin, she vowed she would find a way to get Brianha’s memory back. Slowly she drifted into an uneasy sleep. _________________
