She had received an invitation from Claudette for a surprise party to celebrate Brianha’s birthday. The evening had been filled with much laughter and fun as friends gathered to celebrate. The pick up line contest was amusing, and seeing Max without Ceinwyn had made Mallory smile. Surely Smiticles would be pleased as well, but he was not there. Mallory had hoped he would be there, anytime spent together would be welcomed, but he had not come and now she worried about him. She hoped it was just him needing more time to digest the recent events and not him having second thoughts about her. As she watched others, her heart longed for him to be there, and she realized how quickly she was falling in love with the mysterious gentleman.
As the night grew late, she excused herself from the party, and whispered to Claudette her thanks for inviting her and wished Brianha a very happy birthday. She did not return directly home however, she instead made her way to the place in Ilshenar she used when she needed time away. There were few people that knew of this place, and those that did, were not here often. As she entered the quiet cave she followed the path back to a quiet little pond. As she sat there the gurgling of the cave stream were calming and she wondered if Smiticles had seen this place. It would be nice to share it with him. The night grew late and she retired to her home and it was not long before she was sound asleep. As she slept, a dream returned to her…
She had been out in the forests of Minoc, a place she was very familiar with. She had grown up in them, playing in them as a child with her best friend Jenny and her brother James. They were the best of friends, Jenny and her closer than sisters always getting each other in trouble from the time they could walk, and James usually getting them out of the trouble. She knew these forests better than most. Her father had taught her how to remember certain trees, so she wouldn’t become lost. In her dream she was searching for something, but wasn’t sure what. This was becoming a more and more common dream. It became more and more vivid.
Tonight she had returned to the forests. She was as always searching for something. It was getting dark and the forest was cold. She was running through the forest, away from something unseen in the dark. She looked behind her and saw the piercing eyes watching her and did not see the branch in front of her. She stumbled and fell, but this time instead of dropping into an abyss, she landed and heard the footsteps behind her growing ever closer. She looked up and saw a light coming closer from in front of her. As she looked up a hand was came down towards her to help her. When she took it, it provided warmth and comfort. She looked up and looking down at her was Smiticles. She looked back and the eyes were still watching, yet they did not seem to come closer.
Mallory woke up in a sweat, breathing hard and looking around her room. Her dream had been so vivid, so real, that it brought tears to her eyes. The darkness, usually comforting, was now terrifying. She pulled the covers up close to her chin as she shivered in the summer coolness of night, and soon fell back asleep, this time with more pleasant dreams. _________________ Good friends are like stars.
