Claudette had been thinking more and more about Max. A while back she had been angry with him when she felt he wasn’t as concerned about Brianha as she thought he should have been and his involvement with Ceinwyn really troubled her. Although her cousin was sure her fall was just an accident, there was still something about Ceinwyn that just didn’t sit right with Claudette. She had always gotten a strange feeling when she was around her and the little hairs on the back of her neck stood rigid when she walked into a room.

Claudette thought about her cousin and her friendship with Ceinwyn. She knew that her cousin would never allow her to influence whom she could be friends with and so with that in mind, Claudette reluctantly accepted Brianha’s decision.

Seeing Max and talking to him, Nico and Bri left her thinking about the past and the way things used to be. She wasn’t sure if things could get back to ‘normal’ but a lot of things had changed in her life and perhaps it was time to approach Max again. She was starting to feel that her life was again becoming complete. There was a lot still that she needed to process. Seeing Jerrick Stark again had brought back many old feelings about Aldwin and her old guild, but unlike so many other times in the past, this time she had forced herself to face them and not run away from them. Perhaps Melior’s tenderness and love were helping her to heal.

As she sat at her writing table she smiled to herself knowing what she was about to do was the right thing.

Dear Max,

I have been thinking about writing you for some time now but needed to allow the proper time to pass so that the anger and disappointment I felt toward you had time to dissipate. I do not know where or how to begin but I miss our friendship. Talking to you, Nico and Bri the other night made me realize that perhaps it is time to attempt reconciliation. I know I said some harsh things to you but I believe they were all justified at the time. Your involvement with Ceinwyn still worries me but I feel that I must accept it if I have a chance at ever being your friend.

So many things have changed in all of our lives. Sometimes I wish I could find a way to travel back to the past and recapture some of the simplicity my life offered then. I do not know what your reaction will be to this letter. You may want nothing to do with me and if that is the case, then at least I will know that I tried to patch things up between us. If nothing else, at least now you know that I truly do miss you and your friendship.

Your friend,

Claudette

Claudette sealed the letter and took it downstairs. She had already hired a messenger and had offered him food and drink while she worked upstairs. “Be sure to dress warmly my friend,” she said to the man. "Thank you M'lady" he replied. She then handed him the letter and watched him depart.

Recieving the messenger, Max made sure he was well fed and sent him away with a few gold coins.

He shook his head as he read the letter.

"She should have simply written that she wanted to patch things up." he said to himself, "She said much more than she should have."

Reareading the letter, Max's eyes slowly crossed over the words....."the anger and disappointment I felt toward you had time to dissipate"

and....."I know I said some harsh things to you but I believe they were all justified at the time"

and still....."Your involvement with Ceinwyn still worries me but I feel that I must accept it"

"She says all of this, yet still claims to want to be my friend?" he chuckled, annoyed. "What the letter SHOULD say is that she is sorry for the way I have been treated, and the way Ceinwyn has been treated, and that she and the rest of them are happy I have found someone to spend the rest of my days with!"

At the same time Max was feeling anger and frustration at this sorry attempt at reconciliation by Claudette, he also knew that he missed his old guild mates and their adventures.

"I will be their friend, I will give them another opportunity to show me they are not petty and shallow, and that they should simply be happy that I am happy."

Dear Claudette:

I appreciate your reaching out to me in an attempt to smooth over our differences. I suppose I have a hard time understanding a few things though...

For instance, how is it my "involvement" with Ceinwyn troubles you? What has she done to you? You and Brinaha used to spend time at her house, and Brianha herself does not just consider Ceinwyn a friend, but she has also vindicated her in the recent situation regarding her loss of memory. Are you saying that Brianha and I are mistaken? Idiots, perhaps, blinded by Ceinwyn's mysterious magic and guile.........

Looking over what her had just written, Max realized with a smirk that he had let his anger guide his quill.

"Hmmmm....Methinks I should try again."

Dear Claudette:

I have missed the company of my old guild mates, and would be interested in meeting with you all to see if you have managed to mature since I last saw you.........

Max crumpled up the parchment and threw it in the corner.

Dear Claudette:

Thank you for contacting me. I would like to see my old guild mates again, and perhaps even try an adventure or two for old times sake.

I will consider your letter an invitation to return to River Run Village without fear of encountering any hostilities when I feel compelled to visit.

I am quite happy living with Ceinwyn, and I hope Kesner has been a good neighbor to you all since I deeded my house in the village over to him. Although I will not be moving back, I will consider myself once again welcome to visit.

Warm Regards,

*signed quite plainly*

-Max

Holding the parchment up Max nodded in approval.

"I suppose this is the tone I was going for." he said with a slight hint of annoyance. "I will be their friend, but I do not know if the nature of the friendship can ever be the same."

Shrugging, he rolled the note up, and sent it off with a bird to Claudette.

Claudette heard a bird flying around her garden and went upstairs. She fed it and noticed there was something wrong with it's wing so she decided to keep it and nurse it a bit. Perhaps it has been attacked by a bigger bird? she thought.

As she opened the letter and noticed it was from Max she smiled to herself. So he did care afterall!

She read the letter and was happy with the response. She looked forward to seeing Max more often around the village and hoped they could go on some adventures together. She knew that for Nico's sake, it would also be good to have his brother around more often and so with that thought, went to her writing desk and penned a reply.

Dear Max,

Your letter has made me very happy. I look forward to seeing you around more often. You should always feel welcome in the village. Even though you have moved out, always know it is still your home.

Claudette then sighed heavily and forced herself to continue.

Perhaps you and Ceinwyn can pay us all a visit sometime so that we may get to know her better. As for Kesner, I honestly do not see him around much. He seems to keep to himself a lot.

Well my friend, I look forward to seeing you soon. Feel free to stop by and visit anytime you like. Incidentally, I am keeping your bird for a few days. I fear it was maybe attacked by something and is in need of care.

With much affection,

Claudette

She then sealed the letter, attached it to the carrying case on one of her pigeons and released the bird.
