She was gone.
Unlike many of his friends he had lost over the years where it bad taken months before it fully sunk in, the loniness, pain, and desperation had crashed down on him instantly. He had seen it coming those last few days. The more she seemed to gain control of her own actions, the more her fever grew. Though he was still not sure exactly what he had done, Zarlox knew that Bailos was behind her death.
How long had it been?
Days?
Weeks?
He rubbed his temples and closed his eyes trying to remember. Only a few memories came to mind over the last several days, the rest were just actions muddled in pain and failure. The funeral, now that stuck out. Teary eyed, he had kept his distance that day. He had still been to weak to be seen. He could not let Bailos see him like that, and he could not let his men see their General in such a condition. That was...5 days after her death? He shook his head as he leaned upon his knees. He knew that couldn’t be right. Finally he sighed and sat back up realizing he could not be sure how long it had been.
Thinking through the fog of the days since her death it was filled with images. Were they all blurry simply because he hadnt slept or because he had been weeping? Perhaps both. Shrine after Shrine flashed through his mind. He had visited them all, he needed to find strength in them. He had known that it was Bailos's goal to break him, for a couple days there Zarlox thought he might have succeeded. If Sadira marrying Bailos had plunged a broadsword into his heart, killing her had torn his chest wide open.
He had even tried to bury the pain by searching for Talon. He had tried to retrieve Talons sword, Ice, from the Everblue Memorial. Again he was met with failure. Not only was the sword not there, but little else was. The memorial had been abandoned. If it had not been for the diary he found among the remains, all hope would have been lost for Talon as well. He had crumbled upon the ground there, too drained to continue.

She was gone.
It still hurt as much as ever, in fact for brief moments it sometimes hurt more. Slowly standing, Zarlox looked at his patron Shrine and allowed a slight smile to touch his lips. He had realized that Valor not only came into play in physical combat, but emotional as well. He climbed upon his mount and began making his way back towards Sanctus.
Bailos had not succeeded in breaking Zarlox as he had hoped. What he had done was strengthen the mans resolve. Also, with killing Sadira, he had eliminated the best weapon he had against the Sanctian General. |
