He had been away far too long. Not physically as much as mentally. The hooded robe he had come across was a way for Max to go away without having to travel far and wide. He originally left to hunt Vaen, but that goal soon changed. The words Ceinwyn had spoken to him the last night he saw her hit hard and deep. He knew he could not beat Vaen, but it took her to tell him so for him to truly believe it. His hunt was brief before it morphed into a self-imposed exile of sorts.

Max spent most of his time wandering, in his hooded robe, around safe locations. Oh! How it bothered him to see happy couples! At the market, in their yards, simply walking the paths through the towns…they were everywhere. Ceinwyn was the first woman he had ever fallen in love with, and he swore she would be the last as well. After months of simply walking, observing and thinking, this was the conclusion he had reached. Max would reinvent himself and once again pour his heart and soul into what he felt was right. The time had come to return to the guild.

He knew before even returning home there was work to do when he arrived there. Last he knew Brianha was in the custody of the Skulls. Whether it was of her own free will or not mattered not. Her being there was a result of Vaen’s influence, and Max now felt compelled to make it right. Perhaps his time with Ceinwyn was not a complete waste, he had learned from her and felt more confidence in dealing with the Order. Brianha’s safety was his first priority.

Then there was Swiftar. He had managed to avoid Max while he was at the peak of his fury, but now Max was thinking rationally again with his head and not his anger. Vaen would yet pay for his crimes, but there were better ways to go about it other than headlong with sword in hand.

Once back in Vesper, it did not escape Max’s attention how quiet the village was. No sign of Nico, Claudette or Smiticles anywhere.

He found a letter from Brianha on his front step and wondered how long it had been there. He read it thinking it sounded like a cry for help, but it could have been left there weeks ago. The ink still smelled fresh and that gave Max a hopeful feeling she was well.

Standing outside his old house Max thought back to a discussion he had once with Brianha about how much his house did NOT look like a proper Guild Hall. She went so far to prove her point she had even drawn up plans as to what the Guild Hall SHOULD look like. He chuckled to himself as an idea crossed his mind.

“For her homecoming, she will have a proper Guild Hall to look upon,” he said as he began rummaging through some chests looking for the old plans, “the Guild Hall that she designed!”

Max made a quick stop at the Vesper Architects building on his way to find Nicodemus. He handed them the plans and told them to do the best they could.

“They were not done by a professional, but they were done by a young lady with a lot of heart.” He told the head architect.

He told them gold was no problem and that he would be away for a time. He hoped they would have the new house constructed by the time he returned.

*inside Max's house, locked in a hidden chest somewhere, a blade shines a small warm light. The blade waited for the hands of its newest chosen master to grip it, and for the masters heart to be strong and just again*
