Book 1
Rare Edition
Having taken part in the Minoc Purge I Isk, Magnate of Humanis, wrote the history of the war between Humanis and the Drow, beginning at the moment that it broke out, and believing that it would be a great war, and more worthy of relation than any that had preceded it. This belief was not without its grounds. Indeed this was the greatest movement yet known in history, not only of Sosaria, but of a large part of the attached facets. For the events of antiquity and even those that more immediately precede the war, could not from lapse of time be clearly ascertained, yet the evidence points to the conclusion that there was nothing on a greater scale, either in war or in other matters.
Thus it is that the history will be written using various sources including eye witnesses to the facts, battle preparations, poems and insights to the times supplemented by speeches both actual, the author having witnessed them, as well as words that would have been said by the sides involved.
It is evident that the city of Minoc began as a mining colony before the age of British. Humans from the village of Britain migrated northwards to exploit the abundant resources of the mines eventually increasing the population of the land sufficient enough to form a city. Thus humans were the first to migrate to the site, with frequent occurrence of settlers over the years. This is why the human founders of the city are depicted in statuary around the settlement. Having only the woods and mines the people of Minoc had to rely on trade with other early human colonies of which Britain was the mother city.
Thus as the years progressed the people of Minoc became experts in their craft and innovated the concept of fortified plate armour which had not been seen beforehand. In battle they were unmatched in their weaponry and armour eventually forcing the whole of Sosaria to adapt in weaponry and defence.
As technology became more progressive as did magical research throughout the mainland.
Thus a colony of mages was sent out from Britain which landed upon the empty tropical island of Magincia. Creating the first school of magic the people of Magincia quickly discovered the wealth beneath the earth and began to exploit the underground diamond mines, trading the precious stones for food and luxury goods from Minoc, Britain and Vesper, the later having been established by fishermen around the same time as Magincia’s founding.
Thus the early cities of Man were lined by trade and racial unity with only limited times of aggression between them.
Not wishing to dwell upon the pre-history of Sosaria for much longer it is evident that Minoc and the great cities were founded by human settlers. As time would do the land became fractionalized as more cities formed and commercial trade became the reason for warfare. Lord British had unified the land upon his coming but his disappearance years later saw the overtaking of previous governments by tyrants.
Thus it was that Minoc was taken by the Dwarven Kingdom of Findar and Magincia was taken by the vampire cult of the Ne’Sveti. Other cities having been claimed by forces of darkness at this time including Skara Brae which was held by the sorcerer Rune Artisem and most of Yew which had been occupied by Moonglow remained in a state of insecurity. As times progressed the Dwarves were removed by the human habitants of Minoc and the Ne’Sveti themselves disappeared from Magincia. And so, the Hand of Humanis, having been formed three months previous, set up in troubled Magincia and consolidated the island after winning an election against the Regency which was run by Malicite at the time. Hector became the first Humanis mayor of the island.
It was then that the Drow first made their appearance, their presence being known more after the Magincia fish plague they made a pact with the Brothehood of the Hand and made way to claim Serpent’s Hold (The battle which followed having been recorded in the ‘Battle for Serpent’s Hold’ spic book). With this incursion having failed the Drow they occupied the city of Wind and made tunnels towards the eastern lands. Thus it was that they linked Wind, Cove, Vesper and Minoc through underground passage ways.
It was soon after that Gorhun of the Drow made claim to Minoc and the surroundings lands. Making haste to put the population to work the atrocities in Minoc fell on deaf ears among the people of Sosaria.
Rune Artisem having long ago been removed from Skara Brae and Moonglow having removed itself from Yew the Regency was in a state of silent contention with the new found city of Sanctus which at this time had begun to emerge as a major power in Malas.
Thus with the Regency and Sanctus being preoccupied with each other though not entering open war the people of Minoc suffered under the thumb of the Drow. With Magincia independent of Regency rule the Humanis government understood the need of Minoc’s people and began to set up rallies within the city, the second of which turned violent and resulted in a stalemate.
Months later after much thought the Magnate Isk began to create information that would help them push the need for cleansing Minoc, having discovered a like minded member of the Regency and Sanctus the three met in secret in Magincia under the Felucca moon and created a pamphlet which pushed the need for removing the Drow from Minoc called ‘The NEED for War’. Likewise Mark Randerstill and Artius the new mayor of Magincia readied the guild and city for the upcoming battle in Minoc.
Not wishing for it to look like a land grab Humanis sent an embassy to the Regency on the 10th of February to which no one came besides a handful of representatives. With Drake, Mark and Artius rejected Humanis sent a five man embassy the next day to the Regency meeting which was more heavily populated than the day previous and took place in Serpent’s Hold. Thus it was that Mark Randerstill with Isk, Drake, Artius and Angelique behind him, began to formulate the plight of the people of Minoc in the form of a speech after insulting the House of the Gauntlet representative, Molly. The speech which was short and to the point as the issue required little clarification went as follows:
“We have come to you this day as friends. Long have the people of Minoc needed help and long have they been denied it. Of all Sosarians it was Humanis that rallied in Minoc to support the humans there formulating a stance against Drow tyranny. Thus we require for you, Rufus, to allow us to march on Minoc and cleanse the city of the Inkies”
Having used the racial slur for Drow and stating his initial words there was concern from the Regency parliament that Humanis would hold the city and enslave the population. The lies and accusation against Humanis forced the embassy to move on the offensive.
Mark soon stated that Minoc would not be held by Humanis, the political party being too content in Magincia to take Minoc under its hold.
