Title: A Defense of Necromancy

Author: Stephanos

In the public eye, the Necromancer is seen as a villainous figure, skulking about graveyards and working with deadly magics. That there are numerous approaches to spellcraft, and the necromancer is no different from the mage or the mystic in applying reagent and word of power to activate magical forces, ought be self-evident to all, and other writers have spoken of this at length so there is no need to repeat.

What I will argue instead is that necromancy above all other forms of magic eliminates waste and protects the citizens of Britannia rather than merely channeling power to destructive ends. That it is preeminent among schools in so doing because the way of Necromancy is at odds with those who purport to be Courageous. Such mistaken minds feel Valor to be standing in face of danger, feel Sacrifice to be loss.

Necromancy looks at this and asks 'Why?'

Why should there be sacrifice of life when the bodies of the fallen might serve instead?

Why should there be valor facing risk when one could be girded against danger?

Such people's petty fiefdoms of perverted 'virtue' cannot stand against the wisdom that if every loss gives more to us then there will be less loss, and so they exert themselves to condemn the art which would reduce loss most of all as 'evil' and 'cowardice'.

But Necromancers stand ready to overcome these falsehoods, knowing the Truth of what the art represents, guided by Love of fellow citizens whose lives need not be lost, and holding the Courage to walk their righteous path even in face Courage to walk their righteous path even in face of slander and vilification.

If one seeks to find the most virtuous persons in Britannia, one ought look first not to Shrine or Paladin hold but to where Grave Dust and Nox Crystal are worked for the betterment of all.
