Title: My Diary: Keep Out!
Author: Galinar the Mage
-this book details the recent days of a man named Galinar, and seems to be the latest volume of a regular journal series-

I have the pleasure of attending a symposium this weekend on the nature of life and death. I was pleased and honoured to be able to attend lectures today by learned necromancers, clerics, mages, and healers on the subject of life, death, reanimation, and the Vital Force that separates the organic from the inorganic. In a rare display of camaraderie, this symposium was free of much of the petty bickering and prejudices that typically accompany the gathering of so many luminaries of different fields conversing on the same subject. To see a necromancer deep in conversation with a paladin, while a magic-less alchemist listened on was a rarity on par with seeing the old adherents of Order and Chaos sit down together for a casual meal and friendly chat. Of particular interest to me at this symposium was the discussion of theoretical magics and rituals to pierce the barriers between worlds, dimensions, and the curtain 'twixt life and death itself. It was speculated by one mage that life and death are no more than separate dimensions, and when we "die" our ghostly bodies are simply slightly out of phase with our own corporeal world.
Resurrection magics, then, would be little more than a localized dimensional travel spell which recorporealizes the Vital Force of the subject into a newly created physical body as it transfers back to our dimension! Far from a spiritual matter, this could mean that the path between life and death, this world and the mysterious beyond, could be penetrated by a skillful master of travel magicks! I greatly anticipate another day of lectures tomorrow, for they promise to be as fascinating as today.

Continuing the theme of the discussion of theoretical magicks with a focus on practical ritual, a panel of mages, necromancers, mystics, warlocks and witches sat down while the audience listened in to their free-flowing discussion. As a thought experiment, this group entertained the possibility of a ritual which, in hindsight, sounds quite profane. At the time, of course, in the heady atmosphere of such scholars, the subject of sacrificing the Vital Force of many to re-energize one was treated as a purely academic discussion.
To sum up their conclusions, and borrowing the untested theories of one "Faetul the Mad" as a basis, it was speculated that if one were to be so monstrous as to sacrifice the Vital Force of no less than a thousand living beings, channeling that Vital Energy into a magical object to serve as a conduit, it could perhaps be sufficient to "re-invitalize" the spirit of a long departed individual. Such an object, perhaps a dagger or some other symbolic implement so charged with Vitalic Force, could be used in a ritual to pierce, cut, or slash the veils between worlds and call back the dead, allowing the spirit to step through the opening. The problem, of course, would be that the barrier between worlds becomes nearly impassible beyond a certain point. Though the recently dead can be Resurrected by means of spell (holy, magickal, or otherwise), those long since departed may have passed through multiple dimensions. It is called in the common parlance the Well of Souls that a spirit travels to and beyond when it is too far gone for common resurrection practices. Perhaps if something were to be done to weaken the barriers between worlds it would be easier to perform the ritual to transfer the Vital Force and bring back the not-so-recently departed. Ordinarily, they theorized, it would take something on the level of the magicks employed by Lord British's high wizard Nystul to save the world from the Enchantress' onslaught, though perhaps something more mundane like the weakening of the spiritual barriers on All Hallow's Eve or a solstice might also suffice.
Combine such a weakening of aetheric barriers with the strong Vital Force of a thousand comparable living beings cut down in their prime, along with a summoning ritual utilizing something of great importance to the dead to serve as an anchor, and it might be possible to bring even those long dead and beyond common magicks back to our world. Of course, this all caused some consternation in the crowd, for what monster would be willing to sacrifice the lives of a thousand or more to try to call back one, and what madman would attempt to disrupt the very fabric of reality the way Nystul did once more? The damage to the magical aether could be catastrophic, and the ritual could just as easily direct and feed that Vital Force to some extra-planar horror or daemon as it could to a soul trying to return.
Rather than save one, it might imperil the world or destroy one of the aetheric roads of dimensional travel. What if the ritual went wrong, and we could no longer bridge the small gap between dimensions that allows us to resurrect the recently dead? It is a thought too terrible to contemplate. I am fortunate that this panel of individuals all seemed to agree, even the most base and disturbed of them, that attempting such a ritual posed far more risk than it did potential reward. The most vile necromancer among them did not seem to wish to personally stain his hands with the blood of a thousand to test this theory, and for that I am most grateful. Still, what a fascinating debate and discussion. I am looking forward to taking the trip home to Moonglow tomorrow, and have decided that I will take my favourite route through the lush woods of Verity Isle back from the moongate. After so much talk of the possibility of magical travel gone wrong, I have the need to feel solid ground beneath my feet.
