Title: Attack or Defend
Author: Isk
I have sometimes heard men with meaningful experience in matters concerning war discuss the question that if of two rulers having approximately equal strength and the more aggressive declares war on the other if it is more advantageous to be the attacker or the defender.
For each course I have presented arguments and listed historical examples. Those who assume one should always take the offensive cite the campaigns of the Orcs in Yew. Both the orcs and the people of Yew lived in relative proximity and hostilities between them ran rampant throughout the history of the two groups.
Grishnak having spread terror for years made the situation desperate for the people of Yew who knew much about orc cruelty and did not mind the prospect of moving to the lands of Trammel. So it was that orcs were united and used to the land where Yew was in shock and fostering a plan in case of defeat. With this in mind being the attacker proved more advantageous.
Those who favour the defender often discuss the battle of Stonegate where the forces of Moonglow defended against an army three times its size without losing more than a handful of soldiers. The reasons for success can be attributed to the fact that the MTC were ready for fighting in Felucca and had practised in mock battles against each other holding and attacking the Moonglow Villa which is now the White Tower.
The forces of Moonglow were smart as they made use of theirs shielded warriors in the front of their column inside of the keep along the main entrance so that the mages and archers behind them would not be targeted by opposing warriors.
The attackers not knowing how to lay siege to the keep used horses and charged the gates. After the initial group fell to the spells and arrows of Moonglow’s well guarded mages and archers the horses acted as an additional blockade as the rules of Felucca state that one man can not easily shove though another.
Thus the fact that the attackers were so much more sizable in numbers did not help to bring them victory. It can thus be said that the advantage goes to the defender when holding a structure provided that there are mages to support the defending wall of shields.
Thus in conclusion a successful general is one who can both use the land and fear to his or her advantage.
Attack or defend, as long as you have confidence and know how to use the land to your advantage the day will be yours.
