Title: The Velvet Shroud

Author: Nolin Zar

Life and death are opposite sides of the same coin. All that lives must die in order to rejoin the Well of Souls. This is not evil or improper. To all things are allotted their time, and all things must end. The one common thread that binds us all is that we will eventually pass from this world completely, and when that velvet shroud covers us, we will truly know peace. It is after this final death that our Order is named. Join us.

I would have you know that I am the present leader of the Velvet Shroud. I am Nolin Zar. I am your friend. Life is pain, life is confusion, life is disorder. I do not say this from a place of misanthropy or bitterness, but from the understanding that to live is to suffer. Death is the final fate that releases us from suffering. We do not, as some accuse us, wish to hasten you or the world to its ultimate end. We seek to understand death while we live. We seek to become comfortable with death. Death is to us an intimate companion, never visible, but always near.

We come into this world alone, and the Reaper is the one who will finally usher us out of it. Death is our friend, our one true companion in life. I am your friend. I am Nolin Zar.

Is it not strange that we may die, yet our spirits may wander and through the magics of our world be reborn in flesh anew? Has this befallen you? Have you died and been reborn, only to stare down at your own lifeless body? Have you ever wondered what will become of you when, at last, you shuffle off that mortal coil for the last time? Join us. Join the Velvet Shroud. Learn and become familiar with life, death, and the spirit world in between.

We do not hate you. We are not malicious. We love you. From this place of compassion we courageously seek to know the ultimate truth together. Join us. Know the members of our Order by our dress. In tribute to that most popular image of the one who reaps all souls in the end we garb ourselves in hooded shrouds. We carry scythes and the sickle-like bone harvesters to symbolically show our dedication to that which will finally, truly harvest us all in the end. Won't you join us? Seek out members of our Order. Tell them you wish to learn of the Velvet Shroud. Join us. Join the Velvet Shroud. Be welcome, know Death in life, and finally know peace.

So says Nolin Zar.
