I suppose it is opinion... but if that becomes opinion, then that is grounds for a LOT of disagreement.

If we RP by real world logic, there should be no magic, dragons, champ spawns, paladin magic, necromancy, etc.

If we RP by UO, then all of these can exist, including items imbued with special powers.

I always enjoyed PvP when I played UO. Granted I wouldn't push people to PvP against me, but I found myself smirking and oddly satisfied when people tried to push me and I knocked them around well.

I think PvP keeps people sort of grounded, in a way. It makes you set up a more realistic character, as opposed to someone godly. If you can do the whole godly thing realistically, then go for it! If you don't want to put in the OOC time, or actual IC training, to do something, then don't try to do it.

I agree with Kard about it not being everything. But then again, some characters are able to avoid that kind of conflict, for the most part.

For most characters, there has to be some kind of physical conflict eventually. Just RP it out reasonably, and things will go fine. If you feel you could best someone in a duel, or other odds, then go ahead and do it. If you don't think you could, but want to try anyways, do that, too! Or just kind of give in and go with being kidnapped or something. No one in the community is going to do permanent damage to your character if you guys haven't talked about it beforehand(hopefully), so it should just all be in fun OOCly.

And it could have changed drastically, but you don't -need- amazing gear to do well. Good gear will definitely help, but skill goes a long way, too. I'm not going to brag or anything, because a lot of you don't even know me, and I wasn't super awesome or anything, but I held my own fairly well against most people in things that I made on my own(Horned Runic Kits for the most part). There was tons better gear out there than that, and I would get totally demolished a lot from those who had great gear and had skill, or were named Vaen and used his uber h4x, but I didn't do so bad!

Word

actually i think i realized why i think that.

the reason im able to RP is cause in a way i have had to adapt to Ultima as a real world. and it makes it hard for me to see your badass make or sword weilding paladin wearing one. its no biggy tho

only 10% right? lol

P.S. I kind of agree on the Quiver thing. They are neat and all, but..

Then again, I always used to use a spell channeling shield even though I had no skill with it, so I could just be a huge jerk.

I'm just saying that the Quiver shouldn't be discarded as a twink thing. It may turn some stomaches... but UO gave it to us. I know in NWN/DnD, there are some items that look absolutely ridiculous, but they are powerful. So people use them. Warrior mentality I suppose.

I have to say, as the one with the low magery at the moment, (don't ask) I see no problems with still jumping in and fighting. If you are horrid, do what I did. Heal! You most likely won't die soon as the others are causing more problems, and also you will be helping them in their fight. At least until something random comes after you. *mutters about an ev chasing her everywhere*

And I did die. I foolishly walked into the castle. Hehehe

I tend to agree with Cear, we RP around Ultima mechanics, we don't use Ultima mechanics to RP. "Mods" and "stats" should not be important in the RP community, we don't see these things as RP'ers, if someone is wearing a neon green dress with a blaze deer mask, they choose to use that prop to RP their characters, and will not be taken seriously because of it, no matter how they justify it.

This also relates to PvP, for example, in The Damned, we have a strict dress code (no quivers, no sunglasses, no odd looking clothing, dull earthen and dark colors for uniform), it helps role-players take us seriously.

But yet, with those limitations, we all still excel at PvP, we build our templates, suits, and characters *around* roleplay, not vice versa, and this is an important factor in a role playing community.

On the topic of PvP, moderation is the key, just as we don't appreciate unrealistic role play, constant PvP that defies certain RP aspects is not a good thing.

I'm not saying that we see the mods either. But someone would know that the item is magical somehow. Mages can easily detect a magical aura around something, and usually detect what it is.

It depends on how you play the game. Hell, I wore one on Asher. But he didn't keep arrows in it, he kept his pet squirrel in it. Razz

I was going to say, the quiver, when it is on, holds my swords for Doireann so she can change weapons quickly. She takes it out of the bag so when fighting, straps it on, and then has easy access to her weaponry. That's how I've always RP'd it. As for glasses, any character with glasses has them dyed the color of that character's eyes. Xandria's are purple, as her eyes are purple, and Doireann's are green. When I got glasses for my characters, I was actually excited because now you could see what color their eyes were.

And now, the purebred (and therefore INbred) Orc opinion now rises!

Perhaps it was part of living in Felucca and consistantly having twinks murder and loot my character (along with giving most of my gold to the clan), but like many Orcs I learned to take death in stride and not carry anything I didn't feel like losing or couldn't insure. That being said, I couldn't give any less of a rats ass when I was killed. So perhaps I am of slightly different stalk than some of you. Though frankly I still figure we are all the same.

If I was killed for OOC reasons than that person would have the consequences to face. If I was singing bawdy Orc lyrics in Hanse's Hostel and trying to feel up some of the Legion of Justices femmies, I could pretty well expect to be tag teamed by Vaen and some other Legionaire and be smeared against the wall. If I was doing the same and had 12 Orcs at my back, my foes weren't so quick to challenge me. Well...Vaen still would. He would just coax us outside and then mount up and run around like a chicken, coming back to cut one of us down and then run off again (all the while calling for nearby reinforcements)....not that I am still mad or anything. But no matter the situation, it was awesome. When actions have a consequence, it forces you to manuever in ways that ARE much more amusing than slap fights and hours of smack talk.

But that is what made PvP the most fun of all. The fact that PvP required you to put your money where your mouth is, if you were going to talk like you are the biggest baddest thing on the block. If you WEREN'T (and speaking frankly there can only ever be a single "best" one out there, chances are you aren't one of them) you needed to find some way to get around it. For the Orcs it was easy. We were incorrigible and couldn't care less whether we lost or won (there are always the exceptions, but screw them). We were essentially barbarians. But sometimes we wanted to win. When we knew we couldn't win with Orcish might alone, we made deals with others who had something to gain by our victory (or our enemies defeat).
*THIS* is the aspect of PvP that I loved the most. This is the element where the intrigue and the RP lay for me. Grig'nag never carried arties and never had a 70's suit. I never expected to be able to kill Vaen with Grig, not just because Vaen's equipment was better, but because he was simply a better solo PvPer than me. So Grig rarely challenged him to 1on 1. He challenged him to 7 Orcs on 1 Vaen Swiftar. And being the swell sport that he was, he accepted the fact that the challenge usually came in the form of us jumping him outside the Hostel. No worries though. He always had a horse to jump on and ride off.

PvP forces people to accept responsibility for their actions and choose paths that avoid conflict if they cannot afford it. Guild of rubbish mages? Don't get uppity at a guild that is battle trained. They will murder you. They making trouble for your guild? Bow your head for now, collect some allies (as they are sure to have pissed others off) and strike back with more than they can handle. If they keep winning, they'll keep making more enemies. When every person/guild is there own island, it gets pretty boring sitting out there in the ocean. Band together when you need more forces/resources and dissolve alliances when they are useless to you.

We welcomed the D|O during the 2nd Yew War, but we told them to get the hell off our land once it was done. You aren't stuck with the bedfellows one engagement/situation puts you with. But running and ducking behind game mechanics (becoming blue) just because you can't be top dog all the time is cowardly and boring. If your CHARACTER is cowardly, that is one thing and often fun. If you are being so, just because you don't like not winning everytime, that is something different. There is a good reason why Orcs paraded through the streets of any place that peaced us. It was our subtle vegence for hiding behind mechanics. You didn't want to fight anymore? Means we win. Therefore we acted as victorious Orcs did..
Of course if there was some "twink" issue there, peacing was dealt with differently (i.e. someone not wearing drobe after death, looting, etc).

Short version: Don't talk big unless you prepared to fight. If a one guild is acting like a group of asshats (in game) then band together and spank them. Don't hide behind game mechanics for acceptable RP situations. Peacing a guild of RL assholes is fine. Peacing a guild because they beat you in battles in silly. And not the good kind of silly.

Sorry for the long post.

P.S. If you see any blaringly obvious/obnoxious spelling or grammer errors I reserve the right to have them. Being an Orc and all.

what scott thinks:

PvP is definatly nessesary in RP. but the way i see us doing it pretty much makes me wanna chug liquid nail. Now i never intended to be a pvper. i wanted to be a cheapskate assassin. Ive killed a few people but the majority of UO can kill me in a few hits.

what im getting at it that RP should definatly come first. and....nope, not pvp, but RP come in last too.

an example is that i dont drop alchemy stealth tracking hiding ect for
120 in all of my combat skills. people should simply PvP the way their char was built to RP. if your a carpenter and you Player town/guild drafts you into a war. you petter grab a pitchfork and go into battle and fight carelessly.

and if your not an archer, there is no reason to go into battle wiht a quiver or anything stuipd like that. when i go into fights thesedays.....i see that and do end up chugging liquid nail. please help me to stop this.

one of my members would have loved to come to fight a few nights ago but almost diddnt cause her magery isnt that high.

PLEASE DO NOT FEEL PRESSURE TO BE KICKASS AT PVP.

she joined the fight, diddnt die as far as i know. but we wont some of the battles it was all good fun.

Sadly.....some people in this game ARE demigods. most people fear they MUST have 120 parry and sacrafice jewles that may enhance there RP'd profession, for assoalds of HCI DCI.....sickly true. When i began experimenting this pvp on cear it was a blast. then power scrolls and ect, i still do it and try to have fun but i usually must give up or draw cause no one hits anyone the entire time. there is no way to regulate this but count on people to make sure they consider RP first and last. THEN GO PVP! Woot!

life is good.

The only problem I have with PvP in RP is that people feel like they are forced to be the best. That mentality forces people into the mentality of choosing a template and basing a character around it rather then creating an awesome character and making a template fit.

Take Beleth for example, sure he could be some gimped out bushido mage wearing all leather armor and mace and shield glasses with the best spell channeling weapons around, but instead he has:
Magery, Eval, Med, Resist, Spellweaving, Swords and for now Focus.

My suit is full plate with a bone helm, all be it EXPENSIVE full plate it still dosen't provide half the mods that I could otherwise have. Am I saying I am some uber rper for doing this? No. All I am saying is I would rather have Beleth LOOK GOOD and be somewhat functional then look like someone from Yew gate and wtf pwn.

When your creating a character ask yourselves what you want. Ask yourselves if you want to be something that creates an atmosphere around the people you roleplay with, like a Knight or a Wraith, or ask yourself if you want to be a sunglasses quiver wearing Orc who dosen't wear an Orc mask and isn't recognisible as such in anyway except guild tag.

Think to yourselves everyone... is that extra FIVE... FIVE DCI a quiver of infinity gives really worth looking like a twink that justifies it so he can have that extra five DCI? Do those sunglasses make you look good or do they give you 30 more HLD? Does that half apron make your Knight look like a Knight or a blacksmith on crack? Just think if these extra stats are really necessary so that you can PWN FELLOW ROLEPLAYERS. Hell if your going to Fel for a night of red vs blue pvp, deck yourselves out... wear a set of freaking bunny ears if you think it will help you and spam *pew pew* if it helps you kill that red. BUT! When you are in an RP war FOR FUN, do you really need those extra stats just so you can pwn your fellow roleplayers?

If you can make it look good feel free, hell some of my characters wear rune beetle carapaces with a tunic covering them, some will inevitably wear a half apron ontop of a robe... But try and help those people around you by making the RP atmosphere liveable? Get rid of the ugly ass neon crap, get rid of the quivers if your not an archer, get rid of the sunglasses if your a death knight.

There you have it people, my 2 cents.
