Scar arrived in New Haven moments before the Magnate began his speech. He found Lady Angelique and a few others from House Isk already assembled in front of the bank and dutifully took his place beside them. He kept his eyes moving, surveying the crowd, looking for any who appeared hostile or malicious... and he found more than a few who were.
Amid shouts of "Glory to Humanity!" coming from members of House Isk, there were assorted jeers, insults, and threats, from nearly everyone else. None of it deterred the Magnate. He went about his intended business promoting the cause of humanity, its rights and history, while denigrating that of the elves. Scar looked on and listened. He did not share the views of the Magnate, but he was proud of his humanity, so he did not mind joining in with others of the House.
A few elves were particularly incensed by the speech. Scar was convinced, if they could, they would have attacked them then and there. He noticed two dark robed figures standing back, determined them to be elvish and possibly drow, and kept a close eye on them. They said nothing, however.
The speech concluded, the entourage returned to Magincia and assembled near the bank. It was noted that Alizia Everblue was not among them, and thus Scar volunteered to return to New Haven to escort her home, which he did.
The Magnate and Lady Angelique then retired and Scar proceeded to make his usual patrol of the city before turning in. Along the way he found a merchant seeking escort to Trinsic and he elected to do that after his patrol. The merchant followed him until they were accosted by two dark-robed figures, one of which saluted him. "Lady Ceinwyn?" he asked, and she replied that it was, indeed, her. Scar dismounted and they spoke for some time about newsworthy events: the new government of Papua under Lady Ishtar, which she viewed as unfavorable, among them. As the merchant grew more impatient, Scar took leave of them and proceeded on his way.
As he was speaking to the merchant, out of the shadows an assailant sprang at him, jabbing at his head with a short spear. He parried the blow away from his face and neck, but the point of the weapon grazed his arm nonetheless, tearing a sizeable hole in his ringmail sleeve. Having missed his opportunity for an optimum strike, the foe turned to flee, but Scar pursued and, with the flat of his sword, struck the man in the back of the head, knocking him senseless to the pavement. Scar then sent the merchant away and bound the man's hands behind his back. Noting that the flesh of the hands was very dark, Scar pushed the cowl of the man's hood back, revealing the face of a drow.
Whistling twice, Scar's new falcon messenger, ever aloft when he was about, swooped down and took the hastily-written note of warning in its talons. He lifted his arm up and it flew away on its mission.
It was not long before Alizia appeared on the scene and she began tending the wounds of the drow. By that time the drow was conscious, and they led him to the Basilica on Magincia beach, where Scar began questioning him. The drow spat curses but finally did confess that he was part of a larger group who were set upon the destruction of House Isk. Shortly after, Athlon, then Eldrim the Pious, appeared and Scar gave him in to the custody of the young heir apparent.
After attempting to terrorize him by taking him to the guillotine, Athlon decided to leave the fate of the drow in his father's hands. He was taken to the city prison below the speaking platform and locked within. Eldrim and Scar were ordered to take turns standing watch.
Life in the service of Magincia was no longer the tedium he expected and Scar resolved to make certain he was prepared the next time. |
