'Break' into RP on a new char that isn't known by that many people ICly?

It's mainly just a general question, but I figured it'd be a good one to ask all of you. If answers could be a little more general, I'd appreciate that. To be honest, I don't really play UO at the moment, so I don't know many of the spots or lore or whatnot that is going on, so that's why. I'm just somewhat having problems with this in WoW at the moment, and there's really no where to ask there properly.

I definitely know that a decent amount of people have/had this problem, though! You know.. like you have a character, and you want to RP. You've got the backstory, personality, everything. You don't want to just blurt it all out immediately to get people's attention, but you do want to get into some RP to move on with some kind of storylines.

For me, I just feel kind of awkward and shy around groups of people that my char doesn't know ICly yet. It's probably especially this way, though, since I'm playing on an RP server that I don't really know anyone(was just sort of a 'vacation' kind of idea, and I like it so far), but I don't think that's completely it.

Around a single person, it's not so bad, but it always seems that people tend to group up. It's not so bad if I actually know someone in the group, but otherwise I end up just sitting there trying to think of a way to include myself smoothly into the flow of things.

I tend to just try and drive through it, usually. Even if it means standing there quietly, and just saying/emoting something every so often. I just feel like I'm interupting people if I start talking too much, with everyone else talking. Sometimes this has gone ok and the next meetings with whomever go a lot smoother. Other times it doesn't seem like it helped at all.

Just a general RP sort of question. I'm curious to know how others do things, and would love helpful suggestions! Maybe it'll help someone else out, too. =)

Personally, I just find people that like to RP and gravitate towards them. It's hard lately to find quality RP, but it's out there. I usually RP in Umbra which may limit your character if he's not into that scene, but there is RP in Moonglow as well and I know some RPers hang out in Zento.

I guess the easiest way to find RP is to ask around at the time you want to RP. Sorry, I'm not much help. Very Happy

It's almost a hit and miss kind of thing...sometimes there are people in Umbra..sometimes not..sometimes they are in Sanctus ..sometimes not... what I would suggest, even though meetings are rather boring..find out when each area has a meeting...and sorta hang out then you would have a chance of running into someone..I am sure of it. I know tavern nights were good for those just returning that hadn't rped in a while or new comers who wish to rp...not sure if they will ever be rezzed but hey..one never knows does one? anywho..that would be my suggestion. hugglesmilie

Elf...*smiles*
Long time.

Whatever your character's usefulness, focus on that aspect. Has he wares to hock? Has he service to offer? Seek he adventure? Know he tales to tell? Entertainment perhaps?

We forget sometimes in our eagerness to find and adapt to Role Plays that our characters have their own agenda's, skills, needs, and
usefulnesses. Basic Role Play suggests we implore one another, draw upon one another, and eventually enjoy one anothers company, if through friendship, if through war, if through simple usefulness alone. What have you.

Whatever his or her *smiles* usefulness, focus, implement, and begin there in, is my suggestion.

Well that and, come back to UO.

My time in UO is limited to a few times a month, and first place I'll hit is Sanctus.

The character I use is kind of on the goofy side and tries to get responses from people (either positive or negative so I can feed off that) and some nights i'd send ICQs to Sadira that I was having more fun doing laundry since no one responded either way.

After busting for fun in Sanctus, my next shot at fun takes me to Poets Garden. Usually there are a few people hanging around at different times a night and just last week I even had a few minutes of fun with Molly of all people (Midgets on Horseback still freak me out!... had to be there to understand that one).

Trying to find RP is hard enough but trying to RP with people who dont want to respond to you when you are attempting to make spontaneous role play on the toon not many know is rather frustrating and makes for a short night of UO.

I know your pain, and I'm very familiar with it. I am what some may call a char hopper. I have a designated slot that regularly gets deleted and refilled with a different character every 7 days or so, because I always have some idea I want to try out.

The way I find roleplay is generally by talking to someone OOCly and integrating my character in to their character's story, so then they can kind of thrust you in to their roleplay. Another way is... just have a talkative character. Loner chars result in you being alone, which is what the char would prefer, but not the player.

So either make a char that's in an established char's history, or make a really friendly character that would naturally talk to everyone. Those are my solutions.

You should use the same approach as you would when approaching a group of people out of game.

Listen into the conversation flow, and ask questions. Questions are the best way to learn about the environment, community and characters in the community, from there you can introduce your character and incorporate some of your mannerisms and story.

Approaching a group and emoting is usually appealing to someones goodwill to approach you and include you into RP, I personally prefer an active approach like the one above.

You also don't want to go in there and rant about your background, and how your half drow - half lizardman parents were killed by a rampaging herd of cows. Just keep the questions going and work from there - that's the easiest way.

Hope that helps Smile

*Sigh*

I remember the herd of rampaging cows at the brit west bank pre-tram...
followed the next week(s) by ratmen/lizardmen invasions.

leather leather everywhere.

I also remember some crackhead mage turing himself INTO a lizardman and getting whacked for it (no it wasnt me...) and was crying when he got looted dry of all his toys.
