Eye had not made much progress. He had spent hundreds of hours searching through moldy tomes, grimoires, ancient documents, libraries all over Sosaria for a spell that would free his master, his god, Oggaroth, from the tiny crystal prison lodged firmly in his right ear.
"You doubt me, do you not?" came the voice of his master. "You think that if I were truly a god, I would know how to effect my own escape without aid," he confidently asserted.
Eye shook his head involuntarily, replying with a silent, mental, mode of communication. "No master, I would never doubt you," he responded.
"You lie! This close to you, can I not discern your thoughts? Can I not read your mind? You *do* wonder why it is that I require your aid. So let me tell you, lest your faithfulness falter further and you incur my most displeasurable wrath: it is because of *you* alone that all this is necessary. You must know the forms, gestures, incantations and components for the spell of unbinding, precisely! I cannot show them to you as clearly as I must. And you must learn them all perfectly. One misstep, one broken syllable, one false gesture, one moment's distraction, one wrong reagent, and it will be disaster for us both. Do you understand my servant? YOU must be prepared completely, for if you fail, the damage to us both will be incalcuable."
"I understand master. But I have searched the realms for the spell. I cannot find it," Eye complained.
"Then you must look in ancient places, where dark magicks are venerated, where tomes of great power are stored by those who respect such things, and who would use them when needed."
Eye remembered the great archives of the Order of the Ebon Skull. He had once been a curator of the library in Umbra that stored many of that Order's great works. It had been moved, however, and he was uncertain where they might be, though it would surely be somewhere in Umbra. "I shall go to Umbra. We may yet find what we need there."
"If it is there, I will know it when I see it."
Eye nodded absently and prepared for the journey. |
