Rhiannon tied her hair back in a pony tail and strapped her sandals tight around her feet. The malicious voice had started aggravating her early this morning and she decided she would not give it time to gain volume. A run should take care of it. She skipped off her porch and began walking swiftly towards town. She did not walk long before she entered a steady jog that carried her along the edge of town up to the docks. She crinkled her nose as she jogged past the smell of fish and dirty fishermen. She hopped the fence again heading north on the island. She wondered how long it would take her to run the perimeter.
As the morning run progressed to the northern tip of the island the voice quieted and her mind drifted from thought to thought. Her first thoughts were, of course, about Fong. The last few weeks had been a lot of fun. Splashing around in the hot tub, watching the stars from the roof top, and diving into the river below the waterfalls. She thought of his clumsy form as his body dove into the water. Through her quickened, steady breathing a laugh escaped and she smiled. He was a lot of things: handsome, strong, and intelligent. However, graceful he was not. She giggled, thinking of them dunking each other in the river.
These thoughts gave her energy and she quickened her pace as she waved to Selcius, the astronomer. The stars…she began thinking of the legend of Mondaine that Ceinwyn had told her. Mondaine, virtues, a gem… She wanted to learn more. After hearing Ceinwyn’s perspective she wondered why anyone would ever follow the virtues. Still, she knew – and Ceinwyn had reminded her – to consider the source. She wanted to talk to Vice Mayor Grath. He, Yolen, would certainly have an opinion. She also wanted to read about it.
She continued running south along the east shore line, her pace was swift and steady. Her pony tail bounced about. She circled Fuji’s blacksmith shop that sat on the southeastern tip of the island and turned her direction west. She was at the guild house, already. She passed the stables and quickened her pace to a sprint as she passed the area where Lee had held Tie’s memorial service. This heartache was still strong and to quiet the pain she continued sprinting to the top of the lycaeum. Thoughts of Tie and the recent reminder given at the guild meeting that nothing was safe, not even the remote island of Moonglow, stirred the voice again.
"SHUT UP!" She screamed as it began to chastise her. She continued sprinting and her lungs and legs began to burn as she passed the lighthouse. She nearly collapsed when she arrived home. She sat on the fallen log in her front yard trying to catch her breath. Success. All was quiet. _________________
