Unable to sleep, Thomas pulls out his journal and begins to write.

Journal Entry -

1. Guard against the prestige of great names; see that your judgments are your own; and do not shrink from disagreement; no trusting without testing.

2. Never tell a loved one of an infidelity: you would be badly rewarded for your troubles. Although one dislike being deceived, one likes even less to be undeceived.

3. A pleasant illusion is better than a harsh reality.

4. No man can purchase his virtue too dear, for it is the only thing whose value must ever increase with the price it has cost us. Our integrity is never worth so much as when we have parted with our all to keep it.

5. Abuse a man unjustly and you will make friends for him.

6. It takes your enemy and your friend, working together to hurt you to the heart; the one to slander you and the other to get the news to you.
