Most humans believe all Drow worship Lloth. Many Drow believe most Drow worship Lloth. Nimrana had never taken a survey to determine percentages, but this seemed to him a truth.
For instance, just a few days ago he and his oft companion Veszzt stood near the western bridge into Umbra when a female Drow in long flowing robes approached them. She carried herself with extreme haughtiness and hauteur, both notable and enviable Drow characteristics.
As she observed the two Drow males she sneered and demanded why they did not cover their nakedness while on the surface world? She further remonstrated them for not prostrating themselves in the presence of a priestess of Lloth.
See what I mean? She assumed they worshipped Lloth and therefore owed her as Lloth's priestess acts of self-humiliation. Both Nimrana and Veszzt had been raised to worship Lloth but had forsaken her service for a better way of life.
Veszzt, ever tactless, sneered at the priestess and told her that she could go to...well, let's just say it was very impolite and showed how little he respected her and her goddess.
Nimrana, far more tactful, told her they dressed in typical Drow fashion (each wore a woodland belt, boots, and simple headgear) and that they neither worshipped Lloth nor served her interests.
About this time Bae'vin Kilduis arrived. She and the other two had been meeting much lately. She did not speak Common well and had not been on the surface long. The other two spoke excellent Common, but Veszzt despised to use it while Nimrana simply thought it a useful tool.
Bae'vin quickly assessed the situation and demanded to know why the priestess annoyed her males? Bae'vin carried a whip on her hip and laid her hand upon the pommel. She worshipped Nocticula, goddess of pleasure through pain, hence the whip and her surname meaning "People of the Whip."
Now it happened that neither male belonged to her in any sense, but first Veszzt threw himself on the ground in prostration at her feet and Nimrana followed suit, just to annoy the priestess and go along with Bae'vin's hint that they did belong to her house. Most Drow houses are ruled by a matron and that was the act they played.
Bae'vin gave a nod and ordered them to take position behind her, which they did. Then she and the priestess began a lively conversation about the fact that Lloth did not rule all Drow and certainly not her Drow.
The priestess warned them about the need for Drow unity on the surface (something in short supply in the Underdark). She warned them about the hatred of the humans, most especially those of humanist elitest persuasion. She invited them to join a network of Drow houses to actively resist the Protectorate.
Bae'vin dismissed any involvement with politics. Soon, but not soon enough, Nimrana thought, the meeting ended. The three agreed to meet later to discuss the ramifications of what happened.
First they paid homage to Nocticula. |

By and large, Bae'vin found humans barely tolerable. However, she was also quick to remind herself that it was their world—and that of the distant elven relatives of the surface—she had chosen to be a part of. There were many considerations to be taken into account when making such a drastic move as coming up from her familiar world below, many of which she was coming to realize she hadn’t actually given any thought to during the planning and executing process.
One of the things she had not particularly anticipated was meeting other drow who deigned to act as if things here were the same as the underdark. She supposed she had figured that all the surface drow she might encounter came above for reasons they would likely not discuss, but that they would perhaps at least try to assimilate into the new world in which they found themselves. How very wrong she was.
So it was with a great disdain and fearsome anger when she happened upon the Llothian priestess haranguing the two males she made her company with. Such nonsense, this female—demanding to know such things as why they did not wear armor, why they did not bow unto her. It took a supreme effort of will to not take her whip to the woman and leave her with long-lasting reminders to not cross Nocticula’s chosen people. However, Bae’vin decided she and her comrades would be better served with fewer enemies than absolutely necessary and the two very differing females conversed.
Barbs were tossed back and forth, facial expressions more than amply communicating personal reactions to the ensuing conversations. Bae’vin would not allow herself to be dragged into a debate as to whether or not Lloth was the supreme goddess. In her mind, some things were better left not discussed in public—for a great variety of reasons, with religion and politics being high on that mental tally. Though she was young, Bae’vin liked to think that she was no fool. If it was true that the surface drow were acting here as below, then any bit of information would be used against a body.
With the two males standing on either side behind her, Bae’vin got her first taste of what matron life might be like, and she found this flavor appealing. In her upbringing it never occurred to her that her station would ever be such; her lineage demanded that she would be one of those in charge of slave management, thus, ironically, making her a slave to her bloodline. Now that she had stepped forth and taken a role that came precariously close to that which might be expected of a house matron, she realized that there would be much need to think things over, and discuss this new turn of events.
The unexpected meeting soon enough dispersed, the other female going off to wherever she made her home. Bae’vin, Nimrana, and Veszzt soon arrived at a pleasingly dark home just outside of Umbra owned by another of their breed, and then did delight in the teachings of Nocticula. Discussions and ideas could be handled soon enough. The whip needed to receive its due. |

"I met the other drow you told me about encountering a few days back" Orgollree'rean watched for her reaction, then continued once he knew he had her attention, "I have met one of the males before, Nimrana, I believe was his name. The other male and the priestess I have never seen before. I must tell you Matron, they are no friends of the Spider Queen. The priestess even killed a spider in my presence."
The Matron was angered by her Archmage words, but resisted her urges to explode in a fit. Then she calmly said, "We are not in Ched Nasad anymore, or any other place in Faerun for that matter. If we were they all would have tasted the poison of my blade before I left their company last time." Zararra paused pouring herself a glass of wine, then taking a drink before continuing. "We must be tolerant here, at least for awhile. In time Lloth's powers will grow on this realm, then we be able to turn our attentions on these blasphemous followers of lesser goddesses and gods." |
