KNOCK. KNOCK. KNOCK.

A grandfatherly voice wafted from the room, “Ðo come in.”

Hugh Bracken entered the study and took a seat opposite of the elderly man without waiting for an invitation to do so. He laid his leather gloves upon his thigh and adjusted his Sanctus Gold sash, which signified his sworn fealty to Talon Skyfire, as he patiently waited.

The elderly man looked up from the scrolls on his desk with a warm smile, leaned forward and took a long gaze at Hugh before inquiring, “How are thee doin’, Hugh?”

Hugh chuckled his characteristic chuckle before saying, “I thought you were one that made that decision.”

“Be tat as hit may, there is a decision that only thou can makest.” A long pause ensued before he continued, “Hugh, thee have been here for many moons. Have thee consid'reth when thee will return'st home?”

“I hadn’t put much thought into it,” Hugh casually remarked, “my focus has been on the resolving the cause for my stay here.”

“As thee are aware, thou are welcome to remain as long as thou wish; howeuer, I think the tym has come for thee to consid'r returnin’ to…ughh…” The elderly man sifted through the scrolls on his desk.

“Sanctus, sir.”

The elderly man looked up and shook his head in an affirmative manner. “I remember now. As I was sayin’, thou have made remarkable progress since thee joynd us… When was hit tat we took thee in?"

“December 21st of 360, sir.”

The elderly man looked down at his scrolls again and traced one of them with his finger, “Aye, here hit is. Qyt a mynd for details thou have. The mark of a man of thine proffession. I’m afraid that there is lil' more that we kin do for thee. It is tym for thou to standeth on thine own and return from whence thee come.”

“I suppose you are right, sir. I’ll begin making preparations for my return to Malas.”

“We kin only offer thee safe passage to Bvccaneer’s Ðen. Thou will have to mak thine way from there. Are thou familiar wit the way from Bvccaneer’s Ðen to Sanctvs?”

“Aye, I’ve made many a journey between da Refuge of Thieves and da White Gate. In my early days as a Deputy, I could often be found in Buc’s Den as da flotsam of society that inhabit da streets were very useful subjects for my forensics studies.”

The elderly man raised his eyebrow, “Lest thou forgeteth, it was Bvccaneer’s Ðen where we found thee.”

The elderly man’s comment drew out another chuckle from Hugh, “Aye, I believe it was da The Peg Leg Inn or so I’m told. I do not regret da past nor do I wish to shut da door on it. At any rate, I hope to return to my law duties if Sanctus will allow it.”

“I’m sure them will and paticul’rly in lyt of the fact that thine mynd is no longer clouded by barl’ywyn and mead. Are thou cumfortable with thine decision to return?”

“I’m not certain that anyone with my character flaw would be truly comfortable with returning to da temptations of their former life.”

“I have confidence that an honourable man such as thineselv will do fyn if thou remembereth wat thee have learnd during thine tym wit us. Tho I must warn you of the hazzards of bein’ a teetotaller. Thou must respecteth ev’ry Britannians writ to drank wat they please.”

"I mak not da law, I'll mak siccar da law is da light in da dark at da behest of my king.”
