Arahim felt very out of place at Poet's Garden. It was not a new feeling. He felt out of place anytime there was a tavern gathering. Large groups of people made him distinctly uneasy.
This party at Poet's was turning out to be be more uncomfortable than usual.
He had said hello to a young Cappadocian girl he had met a few times...she did not remember meeting him.
It was then that Regent Isk had sat at his table and handed him a curious book. A book whose subject matter portrayed both himself, and Isk as adversaries, and more to his surprise, with Isk as the object of ridicule.
Arahim had always, happily, considered himself a 'nobody.' A bit player in events around him. He did not have the worries of a Skyfire, or an Isk. He would never dogmatically repeat his last name like a M'real, and he had never even met Molly Kaldhel.
That someone had taken notice enough to mock him in caricature was something very new to him. He reacted with silence as he thought on the who's and why's.
The drunkard Langois had attempted to provoke him, but Arahim did not notice.
A black masked anarchist tried to pull him into his philosophical jousting with Isk, but the topics were above his head.
It was Joanna Weaver who had shaken Arahim from his sullen thoughts, and silence and suggested they sit somewhere more quiet.
He had met her twice before, and unlike the Cappadocian girl, she had remembered him.
They spoke easily, and Arahim visibly relaxed, hoping that she did not think him the melancholy sort.
They both smiled and laughed, and traded stories.
The mood of the night had changed, and for the first time in weeks, Arahim truly enjoyed sharing someone's company at a tavern outing.
The feeling stayed with him long after he had said goodnight, and it was a long time until he had begun to question whether this woman who he had felt so at ease with, had any real interest in a 'nobody.'
It was a longer time, still, between that happy night, and his discovery of a second curious book. |
