Lord Commander Davaran Skyfire exited the jail cell with a look of frustration on his face. He turned towards Winzo and spoke,
“Lord Winzo, you are familiar with this man from our campaigns in the dark lands. You are to gather from him what you can, then file a report.”
Winzo stepped into the jail cell. He looked into the man’s eyes and said nothing. The man looked back at him with no expression on his face. They continued to look at each other, not saying anything for quite some time. Finally Winzo spoke,
“It has been too long…”
“How long?” The man said.
“Years.” Winzo responded.
“Why are you here Tarothin? I suppose that is the obvious question.”
“Yes. I am here.” He said almost in a dismal tone.
“What is your purpose here in Sanctus?”
No answer came from the Tarothin. He glared ahead as if he were lost in his own mind, staring into space with no emotions on his face. Suddenly his eyes flared red and his muscles tensed but within a moment the red dissipated and he remained lifeless again.
“Redemption…Justice…” Tarothin whispered to himself.
“Redemption…Justice…” He said again in a louder tone.
“I am here… because I am a man. The demon that once was me is no more. Now…I am just a man.”
Winzo pressed two fingers against his brow hoping to get a read on the man. Again he appeared emotionless. Winzo stood thinking to himself and choosing his words carefully he said again,
“What is your purpose here?”
“There are things in the past that cannot be undone. I have done unspeakable things while I was the demon. Now I want that piece of me to be gone. I am here for redemption and justice… that is why I turned myself in. The demon… is still bound to me, but I wish nothing to do with it.”
Winzo spent a moment thinking to himself. It appeared that the flashes of red in his eyes were the demon trying to break through but Tarothin would not allow it. Compassion, Winzo thought to himself, was once what he thought to be his weakness. Now, in this light he saw an opportunity for it to become his strength.
“What do you know of virtue?” Winzo inquired to Tarothin.
“I follow them…” He said quietly.
“Mu mu mu….” Winzo spoke the words over and over
“I do not know these words.”
“You will soon…”
Winzo continued to chant the incantation of compassion. He took his own ankh pendant and continued speaking the mantra. He held the pendant in his hand as he focused his power. A yellow aura began to form and concentrate around his palm. The aura began to grow brighter and brighter until Winzo ceased speaking the incantation. Winzo held the pendant up, exactly halfway between himself and Tarothin.
“The past cannot be repeated. I know what you have done Tarothin and I know you wish to put that behind you as a human. I have invoked the virtue of compassion and channeled its energy into this pendant. With this ankh your anger and hate will be gone. Do you accept this?”
He looked in the direction of Winzo and nodded once.
“I do…”
Tarothin took the pendant in his hand and slowly slipped it around his neck. He blinked and looked around the room as if he had just wakened from a dream. His mind was full of clarity and the haze the demon had put it in was now gone.
“Virtue is your path now Tarothin. Virtue… is the road to redemption. Virtue… is the road to justice. This ankh of compassion represents your second chance and the beginning of your road to redemption. I, through the power of virtue and perform a ceremony… A ceremony that will change the path you walk to down. Do you wish to do so?”
Tarothin looked him in the eyes and said yes. He hesitated for a moment and nodded his head once more.
“I do.”
Winzo held one finger up in the air and made eight points with pure energy in a circle. He began to draw runic figures in the air and inscriptions resembling the symbols of each virtue.
“Valor…Honor…Compassion…Justice…Honesty…Spirituality…Sacrifice…Humility… are with you now. Today you leave who you were in the past and become the new you. Today you are reborn… reborn, a child of virtue…”
The symbols in the air began to rotate and move closer to each other until they became an orb centered in front of Tarothin. Slowly the orb passed onto Tarothin and the blessing was complete. He raised his head and spoke to Winzo,
“I will save my thanks for now. I must spend some time alone and grasp who I am now.”
“I understand Tarothin. I have made arrangements for you to stay at Hanses. Take as much time as you please. You may seek my guidance shall you need it. In virtue… Tarothin.”
Tarothin left the courthouse first and walked outside into the lands of Sanctus nonchalantly. A few moments later Winzo stepped out of the jail cell and was met by the puzzled faces of Prince Cyrus Skyfire and Miss Ariana. They looked to him as if they wanted an explanation. Winzo turned to them and said,
“Virtue… is strong this eve’.”
He bowed his head in respect to the prince and walked to his house. |

Everything had gone wrong since he placed the demon in him. That stupid scroll had changed his life and path in so many ways. He didn't know why the greed overtook him to do so in the first place.
He was fine before it. He was an excellent fighter that had worked his way up to become a General in the Brotherhood of the Hand. Why did he always want more? Always always more.
Even now he struggled with the feelings of wanting the world to bow before him. Even as Winzo chanted, "mu mu mu".
He stayed in a deep thought until he placed the ankh around his neck. It was like a jolt went through him to then quickly calm him. This calming feeling was new to him. He couldn't remember the last time he felt at peace.
He had the feeling he made the right decision.
His anger was gone. Well... at least for the moment. Allowing him to take in things a bit more.
After being let out of the cell and Winzo spoke of a room being set up for him in Hanses, he excused himself and walked over there.
So much to do.... and so much to prove...
His mind flickered in this thoughts on the multiple purposes for doing what he decided to do. He had failed so he thought because of the demon's will, he had failed as well because of his allies failures... He didn't fail himself...
Yes he did...
No...
Yes...
Surprisingly when the thoughts happened no rage came to be. He touched the ankh around his neck.
It was at this time that he realized that he was inside of Hanses and there was a woman and a man speaking to him. A flash of recognition crossed his face when he focused on the woman. A servant of the keep...
No, no more.
I am a lord no longer he said to her before going back into thought as they continued to speak to him.
Not caring what anyone had to say, he continued to ponder his next move.
The ankh is only temporary he knew. To destroy the demon at this time would be to destroy himself. But... at least this way he could stay human.
Redemption, redemption, redemption... How? When I have done so many wrong things...
*shakes his head slightly* No, more like unnecessary steps...
The constant talking of the two was bothersome so he said to them that he needed to be alone before walking into his room.
How... what....
It is not my move. I will need to wait and see... |
