Horrific indeed. I hope the owner of the new channel makes it clear that all conversations not directly related to UO will result in a ban.
Molly hints that IRC can lead to gossip; yes and no. Any OOC medium can perpetuate gossip, though IRC is fairly good at it.
Only other relevant point I have to add is that the community already has party chat, guild chat, alliance chat, icq, forums, aim, etc etc... I felt bad when people tried to get UOAM going and it flopped quickly. If UOAM flopped, which was formulated specifically for helping people find each other AND allow chat (even if you aren't currently in game), I don't know how well an IRC revival will work. If it does, more power to ya. |

I'm the owner of the new channel and not once have I even hinted at the thought that I would kick ban ect anyone for anything. So to even quote someone else that doesn't own the channel to try and perpetuate this retarded argument just goes to show that you don't care about the concept of having a new channel you just want to complain/forum troll.
I thought I made it perfectly clear, I'm not trying to replace #atlantic. Firstly I along with many others didn't even know it existed. And secondly why does it bother you so much that I'm trying to help the community? Kinda seems elitist, like we have to use #atlantic, just because you and some other vets use it?
I made the channel for the sole purpose of trying to give all the rp'ers of the ARPC a good way of communicating on the fly/real time. You stated that there are already in game mechanics to communicate. But they fail to solve many of the problems that many RP'ers have, when trying to find others to interact with.
For example I don't know you, Im not in your guild, I don't have your icq and im not in your alliance....so how would I've ever interact with you other than the off chance I run into you in the huge world that UO is, while you are on the character that you RP with and then assume that you in fact RP. The ARPC channel would give you a place to go to meet new ppl that you possibly wouldn't RP with simply due to the hurdle of finding them....and give you the ability to know that they RP because WHY......they are in a RP channel.
This shouldn't be a problem, either join or don't. I don't understand why you are taking this so personally as If im saying f #atlantic. Ill support it right now. Everyone should check out #atlantic there is a load of vets there and familiar faces that I'm sure would make ppl feel happy to see. But that isnt what #UO-ARPC is for, it is what it is and shouldn't be taken for anything else. |

To sit and say nothing about what is happening here violates my personal ethics. When I see or hear something that attempts to close the door on new ideas or input, I cannot but speak.
I recently joined ARPC as a newbie, so far as anyone knew. I was part of the first Regency council, few know that and even fewer care. I say that knowing that this RP community was not formed with the intention of becoming an "elite" group, a closed community. And that is what appears to have evolved.
I spent years in the #Atlantic channel, it was alive and vibrant with rpers for a long time, times change, people drift, and now it appears to be a channel mainly devoted to friends, many who are not members of the ARPC. It is still a good working channel. I was an Op there for years, as were many of you. And, like Molly, I too stop in now and then to say hello and see what's going on in people's lives.
ICQ is great, but rather restrictive, it is not the venue for large groups, or one where others can join and leave at will.
Vent is good..... great for guilds and allies. It relies on the spoken word, and one can so easily be drowned out there, and once spoken, the words are lost; there is no going back a few lines and picking up a statement missed. And, most have guild channels, and attempting to run two Vent clients is next to hopeless.
The forums do not promote a quick and easy give and take, they are closely monitored, which is most appropriate. The moderators do a good job of keeping order. It is also a highly structured and formal medium.
I guess it boils down to what suits you. IRC takes a few minutes to adjust to, the setting up can be tricky, but Deacon's instructions are very clear. It is an open, real-time chat application, and probably one of the best for getting to know the person behind the rp character. Reparte for the most part is spontaneous.
Each is different, and each serves a purpose.
Speaking of gossip....... there is always Vent which allows private channels, and ICQ is perfect for that as we all know. I sometimes wonder if those who use the private channels in Vent have any idea that it is rather simple for some to sit, invisible, in any or all channels. Most know there is no guaranteed privacy anywhere on the internet, and if you think there is, you may be in for a rude awakening.
But all that said, it is not relevant to the point.
The bottom line here is........ why does this concept upset some of the leaders, the Old Guard, as it were? Does it threaten their status or power somehow? Has the ARPC reached the point where open discussion is no longer a good thing?
Are people so tight within their own groups that there is little space for new people or new ideas?
It is up to the individual whether they choose to try this ....... for some it will certainly enrich the rp, for others, there is the opportunity to meet the person behind the character and some will have absolutely no interest. I see no call for a formal vote.
It is a gracious invitation, and that is all it is, an invitation, treat it as such please. Either do, or do not, simple enough. _________________ I hope you dance........ |

I am not part of the *old guard* by any means but I do not think this post reflects a closed door. Actually this community has worked very hard over the years to open its doors and invite people to start their own guilds and broaden its rp range.
Most of the rules in place were established to stop there from being a group of individuals that hold all the sway and power.
But I will say, that we shouldnt be against using a channel that has been put in place for ten years, we shouldnt just say screw that, the channel is largely what we make of it. We also should not shut the door on a new channel, people can pick and choose where they want to be. Heck visit both!
As nice as it would be for everyone to be in one channel it looses some of our individualities, not to mention we will never all get along with each other. So it doesnt hurt to have more than one.
I personally choose not to use IRC for I feel I have enough going on but I do not frown nor do I shut myself out for the future on using it.
As for the worries on Gossip, thats gonna happen IRC or not we are all human. _________________ May destiny guide you... |

I wasn't attacking you or your channel, I was merely indignant that the entire idea of using it was brushed off by some individuals in this thread due to them spending five minutes in the channel here and there and spewing forth a completely inaccurate and ridiculous summary based on what they saw in that time frame. Sarcasm is my sword, sir. |

For a limited time only, joining the channel gets you a free hat.
If you are a true warrior you will jump upon this offering like a beast, before it sky rockets straight to $99.95. _________________ "You see I can not be forsaken, because I'm not the only one. We walk amongst you, beating, r#ping, must we hide from everyone?" - Jon Davis |

Allow me to throw my two gold coins in.
As much as I choke on the words, Molly is actually right. IRC does heavily detract from the flavor and mysterious unquantifiable social quality of in-game interaction. However, if you intend to use it, I would strongly recommend Stratics. Stratics isn't going anywhere, and any efforts to forge a lasting communications function can borrow from its relative stability.
If you like, you would be welcome to conquer #Atlantic. I am very old and very tired, but persistence means a lot more to me than activity does. One of the reasons #Atlantic has been maintained has been as kind of a lighthouse to ancients that may wish to return and re-establish communications. The IRC channel exists in perpetuity for this reason - to let those weary spirits that have moved on navigate their way back if they should ever desire. Over the years, the channel has certainly been reduced in weight, and yes, I will admit that most of its residents do not play UO. The owner however (me) does. I may not log in for four or five days at a time, but I've always been "around". You'd be welcome to seize the reigns, and I can make any interested ops and sub-admins as needed.
Let me know. _________________

Deacon I think it is a great idea. Having an "active ingame community" with mIRC is and will be helpful.

I wasnt joking when I said i was kicked from that chan for no good reason.
Im pretty sure the kick message was F*** off or F*** you or something. I was talking to some guy about his web browser glitching up and just got outed. I dont see why anyone would go to that chan.
UOARPC has been snazzy and jazzy so far. _________________
