Dear Itannar,

I'm sorry we've not had time to meet. I've found myself overly busy with the past week or so. Fear not, for I have not forgotten about you or your request about Alderglen.

After much consideration, I've decided to allow Alderglen to remain it's own entity from Blackmarsh, under these circumstances:

1. You swear loyalty to the Blackmarsh Empire. If the Empire ever requests your aid, you're expect to make it so, post haste.

2. You, and anyone living in your area respect and obide by the laws instated by Blackmarsh.

3. Alderglen is not to have any type of military.

4. Alderglen is not to harbour or give housing to soldiers of enemy ranks.

5. Citizens and Soldiers of Blackmarsh will be given a free education at your academy. In return, we will make it manditory that all new comers to the Blackmarsh Empire will have to attend lessons at your academy. If schdueled lessons are missed by citizens or soldiers, then private lessons are expect to be issued.

6. Because Alderglen wishes to remain seperate from Blackmarsh, it is not the Empires duty to have a military at Alderglens disposal. If the town were to be attacked, a unit of soldiers would be dispatched there, for a fee.

Hopefully you find these terms reasonable. My messenger will await a letter in reply.

Sincerely,

Denzin Bracken
Mayor of Blackmarsh

Itannar read the contents of the letter and decided to sleep on it for a few days before making any final decisions. However, he did pen the following reply and returned it by way of the courier:

"Dear Mayor Bracken,

I am in the process of considering your requests. I would like to take three days for this. I am sure you do not consider that an unnecessary delay, as men of action still need time to weigh all the facts and information carefully.

While I am doing this, might I please have some sort of written copy of the laws of Blackmarsh? I cannot agree to things that I do not know or understand.

If those laws are fair and just, and at least radiate some semblance to the Virtues, or at least do not negate them unduly, I am certain I will have no trouble honoring, obeying, and enforcing them.

As for military presence here, there is none. So that is not a concern to either of us.

As for "enemy forces" I wish to know who those might be so that I may determine if any should come to live here. At present there are only two people who actually inhabit these lands via lease or contract. Neither are of any military sort whatsoever.

I am pleased that you will instruct your citizens to attend classes. The fee is nominal and is only calculated to pay a gratuity to the instructor and the cost of any books. It is not in the best interests of the school to remove that fee entirely for anyone's benefit, but since you do require your new citizens to attend, I will gladly accept an occasional, but generous, donation instead. I must clear this with the Director before I can confirm this offer, but I do believe this is fair so it should not be a problem.

I await the items aforementioned so that I can make my determinations. You will have an answer as soon as I obtain and evaluate them.

Sincerely,

Itannar Darkanor
Archon of Alderglen"

Denzin sat at his desk in Blackmarsh. He read Itannars letter over carefully. Stroking his chin, he thought to himself. Denzin grabbed a quill and wrote another letter.

Dear Itannar,

I've read over your letter and I read over a copy of my letter that I sent to you. I like to make duplicates of the letters I write, so I may look back at them, as in this situation.

My last letter seemed a bit demanding. I hope I didn't come across as a tyrant. After reading your letter, I've decided to make a few adjustments to my "list" of circumstances.

In my letter I request that you not harbor or give housing to any enemy of Blackmarsh. At this time, as far as I'm concerned, Blackmarsh has no enemies. Our war in Yew has been resolved. Any battles that my soldiers take part in, is merely to support our allies, not so much to defeat our enemies. With this said, I cannot provide a list of enemies for you. However, in the future, if there are those who wish harm upon Blackmarsh, you will be given a list to refer to.

I personally feel that I was a bit harsh with my demand to have citizens and soldiers attend your academy for free. I am a business man, I know that sometimes even when a profit isn't being made, you still need to cover the cost of necessities. You are completely right that it wouldn't be in the academys best interest to wave fees entirely. Instead of weakening your academy financially, I feel like this may be a better opportunity for Blackmarsh to extend its benevolent hand.

With that said, on behalf of Blackmarsh, I'd like to donate a check of one-million gold pieces to the academy of Alderglen. This will indeed cover any costs of books, instructors wages and the cost of any visiting lecturers. However, I request that you put a vigorous and focused effort on teaching those of Blackmarsh. Any schdueled classes that cannot be made, will be replaced by private sessons that your instructors are expected to organize.

A list of rough copied laws have been sent along with this letter. For these laws are not concrete yet, it will give you an idea of what to expect.

As stated in my previous letter, Alderglen is expected not to have a military. You have made it clear that you have no intentions to organize one. Article 6, still remains the same also; It's not the Empires duty to rush to the aid of Alderglen if the area is attacked. The academy may prove very useful to Blackmarsh, thus meaning we will of course aid you, in which a unit of soldiers will be dispatched there, for a minimal fee.

Hopefully these terms seem a bit more "fair" than the last. I apologize for my demands in the first letter, hopefully I didn't come across as rude as I feel I may have.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Sincerely,

Denzin Bracken
Mayor of Blackmarsh

Itannar read the letter and hastened to pen a reply:

Dear Mayor Bracken,

I want to assure you that the tone of your previous letter, while candid and to the point, did not seem tyrannical to me. I acknowledge the concerns you listed; they are typical of men in our position.

I will read over the draft of laws you sent. Thank you for granting my wish to see them.

I will be in contact with the Academy's director and will discuss your proposals. The contribution is very generous and, as you said, quite more than what one should expect. And since the dispersion of lore and knowledge is its sole reason for existence, aiding your soldiers and citizens in that pursuit, whether in classes or in private sessions, quite fulfills its aim. In addition, the material pertaining to Blackmarsh that you mentioned should be taught, will assuredly be given its due. We have had lectures here, the material of which I did not personally approve of, but nevertheless was taught. I say this not because I worry what it might be, but because I want you to know that we do not censor anything. All viewpoints are welcome, and, therefore, certainly those of Blackmarsh shall be.

Thank you for your kindness and interest in Alderglen and the Academy. It is most appreciated.

I shall contact you soon.

Sincerely,

Itannar Darkanor
Archon of Alderglen"
