". I will write up some and contribute." -me

I did say that before you said I was complaining about the lack of books too much Wink
Though I am complaining, and I will be contributing (plus some old political pieces I have come across). But one person alone can't account for all of the history of the community. I simply do not know it all. I can write my part and my knowledge, but more people would need to contribute for a larger picture.

Edit: Forgive the tiredness, I don't mean to complain as much as it sounds like I am. I just wanted to stress the importance of chronicaling our histories before they are gone.

I've been working on a library of my own. I'd love to trade anything I've got for any new stuff. I know there are plenty of writers in the ARPC and there are plenty of stories in the crossroads that i'd love to put copy into game. In fact, I'd be willing to pay for the books from some of the writers to put on my shelves.

It's funny to see an orc say he's been working on library.

That's not so odd. Orcs can use the books as bludgeoning weapons and clomp the scholars who come in Smile

There is a rather sizeable library located on uoforums.com (http://www.uoforums.com/lycaeum/).

During my time on Origin, I met and worked with the individual (Dolphoenix) who started that collection. He journeyed to each shard and tried to locate as many libraries of player-written books as possible, got permission to copy the libraries, and posted the texts of the books in the link above.

He has recently returned to UO and has taken up the quest again to save player-written books in a central location, no matter which shard they came from. I do not have contact information for him, but can probably be reached through either UO forums.com or Stratics forums.

The books have been converted to text, and he offers instructions for doing cut/paste of the contents into in-game books. I suspect there is a wealth of history there as well as in our own library in Tokuno.

I strongly suggest those interested visit the link above... well worth the trip.

(I realize many of these books are not directly related to either the Atlantic shard or the ARPC; which seems to be the topic of this thread.)

I have been thinking a lot on this subject after poking through the big library, as well as gaining access to several personal libraries filled with goodies, and have come up with an idea I would like to do which may (or may not) benefit the community.

The main problems I run into with various libraries is 1.) Not enough space / lockdowns (books take up lots of space!) which severely limits the books available (very unfortunate game mechanic drawback), and 2.) With some exceptions, the information/texts are not catagorized enough, or the selection is too eclectic for those who want to read more on a subject. This is also due to a lack of space, generally, which still sucks.

So here is my idea that I am working on:
I am going to make a library, but it will not be a static library. I want to pick a theme, or topic, or general catagory and showcase as many books as I can find regarding that subject/genre, and this would be for a limited time. So after two months or whatever, a new catagory will be chosen and a new bunch of books will be displayed.

Example: I have found a wealth of books regarding the Drow, their race, rituals, artificats, and all sorts of other things. Enough books to fill a small library, really. I would display all of those for a period of time (along, perhaps, with some interesting and appropriate items that go with the theme) in the main library area for people to look through. Then after a period of time I will remove those books, and perhaps put up biographies of the people who have shaped our shard, and so on.

I would write introductory texts when and where appropriate to ground the libraries in context. I think this would be fun because players can return to the library every once in awhile and have a whole new set of books they have never seen before to check out, and can learn extensively about the topic(s) at hand.

I would like to have runes to the other libraries of the shard available for those who want to use them as well, but would like permission first.

Further, I would also like to get permission to either transcribe copies of books from libraries, or borrow certain books, for this purpose.

I think it would be a neat idea, perhaps in the future at some point, to have some sort of academic-type discussion/lecture along the theme of the library at the time. So if it was about the Drow, perhaps one of the Drow scholars could speak on a topic of their choosing regarding their culture or background. Or have writing contests (since I want to see moar books!) regarding the topics at hand with some sort of reward, monetary or otherwise. Just spitballing ideas here.

Would this be something the community would like to see? I doubt there would be any real public events (save for the possible speakers, maybe) so it would just be a place you could come every once in awhile and check out a different collection of books every now and then.

Edit: PS, Yasamin, can I come poke around the Moonglow library sometime? It's all inaccessable Crying or Very sad

My library is still small, but like I said i'll be open to pretty much any all trade for books I dont have yet. Let me know what you need. If you're neutral or green to SG, just take a walk through the valley, I'm the first building on the left in the second valley. You can also just message me your ICQ
