It had been a long night, but he had no inclination to sleep. Far after the Tavern Night on the beach of Magincia was over, Cuthbert found himself returning to the area, although he wasn't sure why. Insomnia? Perhaps. Boredom? Likely. But regardless of cause, here he was, standing on the Magincian sands, breathing in the salt air while the moon hung brightly in the sky above him like a spotlight meant for a stage.
Perhaps that is what Magincia is to become... he mused to himself. A stage. A stage for all the world to see the glory of Humanity. He looked down at the wet sand that was trying to permeate his boots with moisture. Perhaps it is already happening... He smiled at this idea, although he had no idea whether or not he had just had a revelation or if he was just entertaining himself with fanciful ideas.
His mind traced back the entirety of the night. Joanna Weaver had done an astonishing job of setting up the beach for "company". She never ceased to amaze him with her talents and Cuth marveled at the fact that she seemed to continuously outdo herself. Meegan was her usual self - putting on a grass skirt and suggesting that if Cuth showed her his coconuts she would show him hers. He sighed and let out a soft chuckle at this memory. Isk had handled the entire event splendidly, as Cuth had come to note he always did. They had known each other for ages (longer than either were likely to admit to as it gave away the fact that their youth was receding away from them) and Cuth was used to seeing what he liked to call the "Two Sides of Isk". Most often present was the Serious Side. Intellectual, often silent, sometimes cold. A wonderful orator, but not much for hospitality. However, in the times where Magincia was actively seeking to be social, the other side of Isk would come out. Witty, amusing, even warm (depending on the person). It was this second side that Cuthbert had seen this evening. Isk was clearly in his element, enjoying moving from table to table to talk to the different diplomats and dignitaries in attendance. Cuth even saw Isk's enjoyment in running the fishing contest. He smiled at this last thought and began slowly ambling up the beach.
What else did his memory contain about this night? The group of men (if they were men?) in the robes. Roughly five of them, attempting to stomp onto the beach riding dark steeds. They dismounted when asked (although begrudgingly) and kicked over stools when they left. Charming. Thrax had asked Cuthbert about them upon their departure. "See the way they move in unison? That was for out benefit. They believe that it was a show of solidarity. That they are one unit and not to be trifled with." Cuth paused here and smiled at Thrax while saying "All bark. No bite." Cuth had scouts looking at this group of individuals long enough to be comfortable in that assessment, but surveillance would continue nonetheless.
Of greater significance were the looks exchanged between Cuth and Myrddin of Stonegate. He wasn't exactly sure what the undertones were... were they simple nods of begrudging respect? Or was there some underlying hostility there? Isk had told Cuthbert and Joanna that Stonegate was aware of the Magincian broadcast that had occurred in their lands, and that they were not pleased. At one point while near Myrddin, Cuthbert had gone out of his way to make a show of readjusting how his axe sat at the ready. While sitting on his horse, he had shifted it to the side of him closest to Myrddin and rested it against his knee. He wasn't sure if Myrddin had noticed. But hadn't his knee protested? Aye, it did. An ache and some soft pain. Had he earlier hurt himself without realizing it? Or was age again trying to catch up with him? He wasn't sure, and at this point he wasn't going to waste time worrying about it. He would remain battle-ready and he would double the amount of Battle Training the Janissaries were getting. With possible conflicts on the horizon, it was best to be ready for anything. _________________ General Cuthbert
