What I'm saying as far as rp not being allowed on the boards is that if all the rp is in game then your going to use the game to go find the rp. Your going to go talk to people and actually investigate whats going on around the lands and try to gather information. We always said what you learn from reading the rp boards technically is still not known by your in game character till someone in game says it so why even bother with the boards. Go out there and do some digging. rp with some people and hear it from the people themselves instead of avoiding important in game conversations that bring you into the rp story line. If you read a story and walk up to the person in game and know the whole story he's going to ask how you got involved and who told you all of this. What you going to say? the boards? Half the fun is figureing it out peice by peice instead of getting it all spoonfed to you in a post. Role Play is not knowing whats going on but asking questions to find out. I think we don't rp well anymore because we already know everything. There is nothing to talk about when every question we have is answered here before we even log into the game.

Agree with this...

You shouldn't have to put on a show and prove to the right people you can rp to get into this community.Your in till you give us a reason to be removed. We don't have new people because it's so hard to get into this community that tends to only open it's self to the seasoned rp guilds.

I couldnt agree more. If an individual or guild wants to be part of the ARPC we should welcome them with open arms. Point them to the community rules and if they're willing to abide by those then that's more people to play with. If they're new to rp, then all the better. We all start that way at one point.

------------------

As for land claims, I like the concept of the system but it could use some work. Right now as soon as a guild reaches a certain number of characters they're likely to snatch up more territories simply because they're "entitled" to it, but even guilds that have fallen into nothingness seem to be able to retain land claims. I'm thinking we might actually be better off completely doing away with the system of flat out saying "this piece of land belongs to this guild". Instead, perhaps we can maintain a map like the one we currently have, but with notes indicating which groups (whether an actual guild or otherwise) are currently active in a particular area, whether it's connected to other areas they're in or not. This would be used mainly as a guide to help people find out where they might be able to find interaction rather than to tell them where they are or aren't allowed to put down roots. It'd be interesting to be able to see things like where Stonegate has been camping and such. They don't claim the land as their property, but that is where they were. Let your rp establish any dominance you may wish to establish over an area. If you want everyone to stay out or to obey your rules in an area, send out patrols to keep an eye on what's going on and convince anyone else in the area that it's in their best interests to to follow your rules or head for the hills (just watch out for those pesky resistance movements Wink ). If not, then you might just end up with other rp'ers as neighbors and we all know where that leads.... INTERACTION!

Thats what i'm talking about. You want the land then you gotta patrol and guard it. Trespassers will be Shot, Survivors shot again.

I wasn't talking to anyone specifically. I had mentioned earlier that I was gonna randomly ICQ someone on my list for some random RP.

I purposely picked someone who I didn't really have any RP with previously so it would be fresh and new.

You're not going to do any of that, at least if you're a decent RP'er. All you're going to do is insert yourself somehow. I think you're overstating the impact that these posts have on people. If they didn't read them, they might never bother with that particular plot at all.

Even if you read the story then go get involved in game i bet you'll come right back to the boards to get the next update on whats going on rather then going in game to find out. I agree there is a place for writing out whats going on but why not write it in a book in game and share it that way. Lets play the game people.

Of course I'm going to go to the boards to see what someone has written about it—I want to see their perspective.

Everything I've written, I've done in-game, and reading things other people have written isn't making me not role-play.

The boards aren't making people not role-play. Taking all of five seconds to share a song or a joke isn't making people not role-play. This pervasive aversion to taking any sort of risk with role-playing IS, and taking steps like abolishing Hoots or ripping apart the entire forum isn't going to change that. I'm sorry, but those suggestions just aren't going to make a positive impact—at all. Some of the others, sure, but I don't believe the boards need to be torn apart. They have a purpose to serve. If they're being misused, that's on the people abusing them. It's our job as members of the community—especially people in leadership positions in their guilds—to change their minds.

I have no problem with hoots section and threads similar. They are how people in the community get to know each other in an OOC setting and that is important. I'm only questioning the use of forums for direct roleplay.

I agree here. Especially with the perspective part. It's great to see the same event through different people's eyes.

Also, there are certain aspects you cannot do because of game mechanics. We have certain limitations, however, writting lets us bypass them.

This is coming from someone that will get in game, travel to her favorite spots (which I have a place or two for each character) gaze about and then write down IRL what that character would be feeling and what might be going through their mind at that very moment. Personally when people write stories, they aren't doing it to be informative, sometimes they are done to convey a certain thought or emotion that may not be summed up in an emote.

Should we give up reading altogether Barnes and Noble be damned because we weren't there during the heroine's tale so we shouldn't know of the story? How many stories have we read that inspire the characters or plots (notice I said inspire, not mimic)? I can tell you that we have such amazing creative people that write on these boards. Sometimes reading these boards, a book, a song, or even certain movies just inspire me for the sake of being inspired and flip that switch in my head so it drives me to write a story of my own or even dare I say it, *gasps* an entire plot.

Apologies. That was directed at Arahim, with whom I agree on (nearly) every other point he's made.

The forum is a tool to further enable RP. Nothing more, nothing less. It is what people make of it. The forums themselves don't need to change.

Now then, you all have valid arguments. Just hear me out, please.

PvP isn't everything and it sure isn't a cure-all. It does help during inactivity, but so did war pick the country up for The Depression. Try to remember that everyone has their own perspective. Some people like PvP and some don't. Some like the fighting more, some like the stories more.

The stories. Let us bookworms and such write our stories, that is part of what we love about roleplay. Leave the fighting to those who enjoy it, because that is where they derive their fun.

If someone can't separate reading a story OOC (that's Out Of Character for any new people who may be reading) from the roleplay they are doing in game, whose fault is that? They are the ones that need roleplay classes and to stop reading the IC ( again - In Character ) posts that are posted here. And you can't blame the author of a post for that, only the reader.

This is starting to sound like "I can't stand the way people curse on the radio, so I shall get the FCC to start controlling what EVERYONE hears". If you don't personally like the stories, stop reading them.

I personally am actually undecided on whether or not people should get to know each other OOC. I find that there is a small element of mystery that adds to the enjoyment when you don't know who is behind a particular character. It can help the less experienced stay in character when they don't know "Oh that's John", and it keeps it feeling fresh. Especially when we hit those times when it feels like there haven't been enough new people in a while.

How many times have we heard over the years (yup same argument every time this type of situation comes up) "The community is getting smaller and it's the same players over and over on alternate characters". This is such an old debate it I am actually finding it quite amusing. There is always some brilliant thing that is done, and the community keeps turning. I really look forward to seeing what the community comes up with this time.

You lot are wonderful.

Enough on the boards discussion, does anyone have some ideas to make this community a place people want to be?

How about this. Think about the rp experiences you love or really remember. What made them special? Is it something that has been missing?

I said, I remember dory and an orc, where the orc *loves Gorgo!!* wanted Dory as his femmie, and she basically wanted him to die.

I remember being with Shade while on Xandy and just randomly going from rp area to rp area, looking for Mimus, (the mocking bird).

I loved watching Barl and Talon sit and discuss the pros and cons of necromancy in Hanses. (Then setting Barl up for a date... even liches need love, right?)

Trying to be a lawyer in Sanctus to defend MTC for crimes. (I think Fong just wanted to use bombs more than any rescue).

This is a small bit of what I love in rp. Interacting outside of my norm, creating conflict, being silly yet having it work. Looking at my list, though, I'd say the biggest missing thing is rp'ing outside the random, and I'm fully guilty of not doing that at all recently. I blame myself, yes. However, maybe that train of thought can help others figure out what they think is needed.... what are the best memories?

Hey guys, I made a post on a proposed land claim system change, but since this thread has so much in it, I wanted to make it separate.

Please check it out here:

Oh ARPC, you've been good to me.

Some of my best memories come from these forums, the ones that proceeded them, and the great roleplay that took place there within.

Frankly, I wasn't even sure UO was still going. This game is going to be 20 years old sooner rather than later...

Anyway, I saw this discussion and just had had had to chime in. Because, not to brag (ok, a little) but my teenage self ran some damn interesting story arcs, and wrote some damn good stories. I haven't had that same writing spark since.

Ask yourself, what is central to any good story? Is it the plot? You could make that argument, though in reality, pretty much every conceivable storyline has already been told, retold, and re-retold a thousand times. There's always a bad guy, a good guy, a conflict, usually some sort of love interest, and the fate of a family/country/universe of the line. You don't need stories.

You need characters.

What does Hollywood pay for more than anything else? Characters. Those stars making the big bucks? They're all characters.

The problem with characters is that they get old, stale, and boring. When the same people have been interacting with the same characters for so long, you just sort of lose that spark.

You need to reintroduce the community to itself. Perhaps even try for a fresh start, regain a stake in the community. What is holding you back? What rules? This game is yours to do with it what you will.

An idea, one that may go over better with some people better than others. A community-wide calamity. Some great event that affects everybody, good, evil, neutral, blah blah blah. Maybe kill some main characters off. Dissolve guilds. Force everybody to consolidate at a single point, and interact with each other in this one place for a month. It would give new characters, new guilds, new alliances and animosities to form. Really challenge yourselves to step outside of your comfort zone. Have some fun with the game.

After that month, people can, for whatever reason, start returning to the world, making claims, "rebuilding", and coming into conflict with each other.

It would also be an opportunity for older players to return, either with a new character or some old school return of a famous name. Reach out to old friends and try to convince them to come back and try the new community on for size.

But it has got to be a big change. I noticed a post about land claims, and my own personal experiences were less than pleasant. Eventually, I got tired and jumped ship to WoW for a while, just to get away from the nastiness. It didn't matter that some really great stories and conflicts arose as a result...the behind the scenes, OOC natiness got tiring. It wasn't a game when people took it too seriously, and old land claims can draw up bad blood.

That is what it would take for me to come back. I had a lot of fun roleplaying with some of you, others I never had a chance. But I am pretty damn proud of some of the roleplay I helped to create, and I know that there were a lot of other great RP'ers who made it possible too. Make some big moves, might be surprised what happens.
