As Alizia sat at the writing desk, her thoughts drifted over to the past few months. She had received word that her father had taken quite ill. She, without thinking, quickly gathered up her and the children's things. She knew that Mark was and had been busy with more important things. She figured, she would get a chance to write him to let him know where she went to. Once she arrived at Yew, she booked a room for her and the children at the local inn. She knew that the house was full and that it would not need extra bodies or mouths. When she went to her childhood home; the vision of her father, seemingly wasting away, would always haunt her memory. The chisled features of his face, seemingly sunken in making it almost like a mask of death. His once broad shoulders and buff form...almost a mere skeleton of its former self. She nearly choked on her words at the first sight of him. How could he have gone this bad..it seemed just the other day she saw him. But in truth it had been over a year. She quickly had Nadia take Charles hand, while she moved to her father's side. She knelt next to him, taking his hand that seemed as if it would crumble should she squeeze too tight.
Weeks had passed, and all her time was spent with him. She, so desperately, wanted him to get better. Though the thought of losing him pained her, the sight of his suffering cut her even deeper. She never once left his bedside, tending to his needs while giving his wife, Bernice (her step mother) a breath of fresh air. Alizia took time out to ensure that her younger siblings and her own children had food. When the night would embrace the skies; she would take her children to the inn and tuck them into bed. Once they were sound asleep, she would return to her father's side.
This night was different, she felt in her gut that something would be amiss. After tucking the children in their beds; she moved to the writing table. Her eyes caught the soft moonlight glow about her son. How innocent and sweet he looked. She started to take notice, that he was starting to retain his fathers features, especially around the eyes and nose. It was then that it dawned on her; she couldn't remember if she ever wrote to her husband to tell him what was going on or not. Her heart sank when the thought of what a horrid wife she had been. She quickly took out a parchment and pen. As she got the first two words written, there was a knock on the door. When she answered it, she saw Trey, her brother. The look in his eyes told her what she needed to know...but her heart would not accept it and demanded to hear it. He just looked up into her eyes and wrapped his arms about her in a hug that could have easily taken her breath..had her breath not already been cut short by the sadness that swelled in her heart. It was then the soft whimpering whispered words..
"He's gone."
...vibrated her very core. She wrapped her arms about Trey and two of them stood there for the longest time, crying and taking solace in each others pain. After several moments passed, she sent Trey on his way, informing him she would be there shortly. She then returned to the letter, she had started..to finish it:
My Dearest Husband,
I was going to write to ye to let you know I am in Yew. I had received word that my father was deathly ill. I was going to let you know that I will be gone for sometime. I hope you can forgive me for my thoughtlessness in informing you of such events. But alas, my letter comes to you with from a heart laid with the burden of sadness. My father has just passed on. I will be here for a few more days ensuring all the arrangements are made, as well as attending the funeral. I know you are quite busy, but if you are able to find time..I would love to have you here at my side. I do hope to hear from you soon.
Love always
Ali
She then sent it by messanger. Once the messanger vanished along the horizon, she went to wake up Nadia. She whispered to her that her grandfather had just passed. Nadia nodded pretending to be sleeping, while silencing her tears with the pillow. Alizia then went to her childhood home, to give her father the final peace he deserved. _________________ "Nature gave man two ears but only one tongue.
