"The next thing he knew, a band of orcs popped out of the bushes and the only weapon he had was the knife he brought to cut the cake." Lilyth giggled. "I told him not to take her to the Yew woods for a picnic. You'd think he would have learned to listen to me."
Dealthagar was laughing so hard his eyes watered. "Solomon was always the hard-headed sort. What did he do?"
"Nothing! His date snatched up the picnic basket, smashed it over the orc leader's head, grabbed him by the hand and ran. There were two bottles of Vesper Ale in the basket that broke, so the orcs were too busy trying to get to the booze to chase them!"
The two old friends roared with laughter. After gaining his composure, Dealthagar began refilling thier mugs. "So what happened?"
"Seems she liked the danger. They got married and he retired from adventuring. Solomon's now working for her father as a foreman in his lumber mill. They had thier fourth or fifth child last winter. I lose track." She peered over the mug and studied him as she drank. "Whatever happened to you and Anna? I thought you two were getting hitched."
Dealthagar looked wistfully at the picture of his Dark General, hanging on the wall. He had comissioned the painting years ago, when he and Anna had first founded DA. It sat in it's place of honor, with a gilded jewelry box on display in front of it. "So did I." He sighed deeply , turned and took a long drink from his mug. "Several times. Who knows?" He knew in his heart, it would never be. Fate, destiny, the stars, the gods...somthing would not let it happen.
"It's a damn shame. You're the sort of man that looks good with a strong woman on his arm." She smirked.
"Probably why I've made it a point to surround myself with them."
"Surround?" Her eyes raised in surprise, a playful smile crossing her lips.
"Alright. Pandora, Anna and you." He chuckled. Not bad company to be found in.
"Indeed." She drained her mug, and began playing with one of the gadgets on Dealthagar's desk.
"Indeed." He stopped for a moment, and though about his words. A look of mild shock crossed his brow, then slowly shifted to a relaxed smile. Quickly getting up from his chair, he crossed the room to one of the chests in sotreroom area of his office. After a few moments, he found what he was looking for and opened a gate. "Come. I want to show you something."
Taking his elbow once again, they entered the blue portal, the sound of crashing water filling thier ears.
