The wind swept through the hall as the elders of the Necromantic Brotherhood awaited anxiously their new Provost. Grim faced, they muttered amongst themselves, their voices echoing off the dark gray stone. The city had been gripped in fear as the new leaders, The Ebon Skull, consolidated power, and they were about to meet the Skull’s representative. Suddenly heavy footsteps were heard, as a pair of hobnailed boots clomped across the hall. The elders parted before the hooded figure, but rumblings of disappointment are heard. The figure shuffles past them all and takes his place before them, and speaks in a thin but cold voice,
“Some of you, expected a giant, or some sort of monster. You have me. But let me make on thing clear, I am in control.”
At this statement, the elders erupted into shouts as they shouted, but one voice cut through the rest,
“Just who do you think you are?! It was we who kept this city safe, and we will decide it’s future!”
The Provost then snapped his head towards the speaker but continued flatly,
“In order to commemorate the ascension to power of our new rulers, I have organized a small event in order to show both our strength and loyalty. The time has come to make an example of some of our internal enemies. To eliminate them in such a way that throughout the realm, and throughout the world they may see, know and shout. ‘They are purging the traitors! And will continue purging them until our land is free of their presence, and they burn in the dark embrace of oblivion for all of eternity!’ This is my dream, my vision for the purification of our fair city, and I have a short list of those that will be the first to be purged for the benefit of the whole...”
The next day as the shops of Umbra opened there was an ornament just before the bridge. The bodies of the Elders, and two paladins caught within the borders were seen impaled on wooden spikes, and a sign beneath them was covered in the dripping blood, the letters barely visible read,
“This is the fate that will befall all those that betray The Skull. You have all been warned. There will be more, and more until our land is pure once again. Sincerely, Provost Telver”
The traitors whimpered and squirmed on their perches, it would take a long time for them to die. |
