Leaves rustled in a sudden breeze, stirring the trees slightly. The sky darkened slightly over the Yew woods. The sounds of the forest seemed to suddenly stop, as if the noise would bring trouble. Not a single forest creature ventured near the clearing, somehow sensing something was about to happen. Even the flowers within the small grove seemed suddenly less colorful. The entire forest seemed to hold its collective breath.
The ground suddenly moved slightly, causing a few leaves to fall off nearby trees. Just as quickly, the movemont ceased. A loud crack echoed through the forest. A circle of light seemed to magically appear in the exact center of the clearing. Colors flashed within the circle, as it slowly grew in size. Within moments it was ten feet across. Any wildlife nearby quickly scurried off in terror. With a flash of blinding colors, the circle was gone.
Kneeling where the circle had been was a figure of beauty. Her blond tresses cascaded down past her shoulders, as her blue eyes looked upon around the clearing. Her pale yellow dress clung to her body as she stood, surveying the area. Many moons had passed since she looked upon the familiar landscape. With a mix of feelings washing over her, she turned to the north. The Abbey seemed a fitting place to visit first.
As she strode through the forest, she thought of times past. Her memories replaced the swamp with green grass, the ugly trees with the great Yew trees of old. A sigh escaped her as reality struck home, reminding her of other things from her past. She glanced down at her hand, seeking the ring upon her finger. It seemed so long ago that she had buried her true love. Her heart still ached for him, just as her mind railed against the injustice that had been done.
Her boots echoed on the marble floor of Empath Abbey. Glancing around the place, more memories flooded her mind, of times spent with the school run by Anna, or of sitting at the Yew Council, debating over what to do about the Orcs. Shaking the thoughts away, she strode into the small chamber at the back of the Abbey. Kneeling, she lowered her head in respect to the ankh on the small platform. Her virtues had sustained her throughout her life, and now they would continue to serve her. At last...she was home. |
